What is a good substitute for Sigment? Not carpenters glue.

Hi Perry.   Fab-Tac fabric cement from Aircraft Spruce.   It is a dark amber cement that would remind you of Ambroid.   Out of the can it is thinner than Sigment.   I like the cement to be a little thicker so I pour some into a container and let sit open for a day or two.   Some of the solvent evaporates out and leaves the glue thicker.  I then pour that into a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle and it's good to go.   It seems to end up stronger than Sigment.   You can order pints..  I'm into my second gallon in around three years.

I got the "pint' I ordered, which turned out to be a quart. I tried it on a cloth hinge sample and the next day the cloth peeled off easily. No strength at all. I tried it on two pieced of balsa and got the same results. Even double glueing didn't work. I'll mix it with clear dope.
I did have a tube of Aleene's original "The Ultimate" adhesive that is strong like Sig Bond and available. A balsa test is curing now..

Perry sorry about your trial but thats why I said to let some of the solvent evaporate to let it thicken.   Once you do that it is very strong.   Out of the can it is as thin as dope-sort of like the original Ambroid which required a lot of preglueing.   Just about everything in my current fleet is built with it and I've had nothing but good results.

Try the Nitrocellulose ... its $30+ a quart.  Out of the can its clear but after a bit of air exposure it looks just like Ambroid.  If it gets too thick, thin with Acetone.  Good stuff.

I allowed a small amount the glue to gas off for a while and got it into a bottle. It's great stuff. A more scientific approach today, I poured 2 ounces into a cup on a scale and let it gas off to a consistency that looked about right. It had lost a quarter ounce of weight. Dries faster than other glues I've tried in the past.

Well, the cool thing bout this is, that you can reverse the process if need be to make it thinner again. Indoor F/F guys think solvent based glue, even Ambroid about 50/50.

   Type at you later,

After using Ambroid for years, I tried Sigment on a Starduster X wing, pre-glued and all...which I never did with Ambroid. The wing pretty much fell apart when I took it up off the waxed paper covered plans. Re-glued with Ambroid and it was fine. I never used Sigment again and think it is & was best disposed of in the trash.

I don't recall ever using Duco, but the F1B great Bob White used it. I brought some "Tarzan's Grip" back from Oz, and it seemed much the same as Duco via the sniff test...good!   LL~ Steve

One more try ..... the nitrocellulose from 3Rivers Archery is about $30 a quart .... I use the MonoJect 412 syringes.   I fill them from a 4oz squeeze bottle filled from the quart container.  It may be clear in the quart can at first, but after exposure to air it will turn amber, just like Ambroid.  It works.

I am very lucky,, I still have a pint of actual Ambroid.. Many moons ago I used to buy it by the quart, four at a time. Also have one big tube and one tiny tube that came in a kit. Neener, neener.

There is someone that has recreated Ambroid glue for the FF community.
