Looking for some light, good quality balsa for a new stunter build. What sources do you guys use these days. Tried Lone Star, but can't get anyone to answer the phone. Any other good sources ? :)

I placed an online order with Lonestar on Dec 16th, had the confirmation by the 18th, and the order arrived on the 21st or 22nd. Most of my order was 4-6lb wood, and most of what they sent was very decent. There were a few heavy pieces, but I'd consider that normal. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same in the future. Sig recently reworked their balsa page, and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them either.

Thanks everyone. I placed an on-line order with Lone Star. Remember building Uncle Riley's Vampire around 1967 or so. Anyone still in the Toy airplane business for so long, has to be good. :) Hope to have my order in a week or so. I'll report back with my results.

Perhaps you were thinking of Wooten's "VOODOO", a very popular combat model.
I bought a "Double Voodoo:" kit a week before the 1963 Nats. Built them both and entered in combat at Nats (Chicago_). Did OK until I had to go up against the Mexican Team. Got squashed real good!

No I wasn't thinking about the Voodoo. It had become 2nd string by 1967. I believe Riley's Vampire was the first foam wing combat kit ever produced. I only built one. Mine had "issues". By then I was rollin my own foam airplanes anyway.

I just ordered a few log's worth from Lone Star too.
Vampires...I remember the carboard wing covering that come in the kit. IIFC, Riley later had an RC kit that looked suspiciously like two Vampire cores joined to make a wing with the same cardboard covering.

I always order more balsa than I need from any source, Lone Star, National Balsa and Sig. Have hd very peices that were no usable some where during construction. I too had the Vampire kit when it hit KC. Was not comparable to a good VooDoo.

I flew Vampires for a while. They built heavy but were very tough. Then I started flying this thing called Guillotine........

My brother-in-law and I flew VooDoos and Sneekers thru 1965, but changed to Riley's Vampire in 1966 and found them much quicker (no pun intended) in maneuvers than the VooDoo. We did pretty well in midwestern competition during the latter 1960's, flying the Vampire with Fox .36xBB and later Super Tigre .35 Combat and G-21 .35 engines. I finished 5th out of 73 contestants in the 1968 Olathe, Kansas Nationals with the Vampire/Super Tigre G-21 .35 combination. Of course, Riley took the first place trophy that year and yes, he was flying a FLITE LINE Vamipire with a Wootenized Fox .36xBB. If anyone could ever take command of the combat circle when he stepped into it, it was Riley Wooten! y1 D>K H^^

Before the fire I got all my balsa from Lonestar. After the fire I got several orders from National. I have gotten very good wood and the deliveries were what I ordered. Now I will try Lonestar again since they are back up and running well. I really liked to call Riley and tell him what I was doing and what I needed, he knew the deal.

Ok, I placed the order on-line Saturday, and got the order conformation on Tuesday. And Mike (at LoneStar) says it will ship on Wednesday. So far so good. Now I'll wait and see how good the wood is. More shall be revealed. :)

Better yet, just order a Umland kit. Can't beat that balsa.. H^^ y1 #^

My local hobby shop sells Bud Nosen balsa and since the majority of the customers there are into RC ARFs, I buy 98% of anything marked Bud Nosen. I got lots of it. Not sure if I can take it with me, but hell could use some nice balsa I'm sure. LL~ LL~ LL~

OK, here is an update on my Lone Star Balsa order. I received the order yesterday the 14th. I placed the order on the 5th, received acknowledgement on the 8th. Reasonable enough. The quality of the wood is pretty good. And the grain selection is pretty much what I asked for. Only problem is the 3/32nd sheets I ordered are not 3/32, they are 1/8". So I called & left a message informing them of this problem, and also sent an e-mail stating the same. So I'm waiting to hear back from them. More will be revealed. :)
