Here is the latest stunter of the week. Kawasaki Ki-71 Hein or as we called it "Tony". 40-46 power, 584 square in. wing. About a 6.1:1 aspect ratio. Gander away!

Pat,
you do realize that now all of the people following your design progression are sitting at their computers staring blankly at the screen, simply unable to make a decision as to which of these new designs they want to build,, its not fair,

And if I may be so bold, may I suggest a plane that I have never seen modelled before? I mean come on! This baby has testosterone all over it!

"This time, the project engineers were forced to completely change the driving system for the new fighter. The choice fell on British engines of the newest versions, the Rolls-Royce "Griffon" type 120 or 125, although the radial Bristol "Centaurus" had been proposed too. The Griffon turned out to have the smallest frontal surface, and the placing of the liquid cooler under the central part of the fuselage caused an even further similarity to the "Mustang". However, it turned out soon that troubles with the drive should plague the CA-15 from the beginning. At this time, the Griffon version 120/125 had not yet reached its serial production stage, so the British decided to replace it by the weaker version "Griffon 61".

I believe thats an affirmative!

Frank McMillan built a Martin Baker MB5 not all that long ago. It was very nice. I remember seeing one in one of the model mags years ago too.

Glenn...I have seen a photo of the CA-15 (Aussie fighter prototype), so am familiar with it. It is ugly! The Curtiss 75 or P-43 would be cool, but let's not overlook the P-39 and P-63. They've both been done, but not recently. And the Brewster Buffalo has never been "stuntified"! However, this little known advanced trainer is my pick for a cool looking stunter. No dreaded swastikas on this prototype, either. It's a Skoda SK-257. Post-war, Skoda was a/the Czech auto maker.

Sorry Steve, normally I would defer to your advanced age and knowledge base! LOL But I can't believe that you are looking at the same CA-15 that I am. Its sort of like a P-51 on steroids with a mean honking Griffon in it. The planes you mentioned are sort of wellll....porky. The little one you have the 3view of ain't too bad....but have a look at the 3view at the bottom of this message. I think your thinking of a Wirraway or something.

Nope, that's the CA-15 I know and don't care for. The Whirraway was a single-seater AT-6 with guns, ya know. It might have had a bigger donk up front, but I don't remember the details.

In 2005 I had a Tony.

I loved its side on profile shape - Very clean on the end of the lines.

Is that the one you rescued from my workshop part built PJ. Can't remember much of that night!

Looked good completed. Must build another one of those Warburton ones for classic if I can get interested again.

Hey Pat,
Did you intentionally renumber the Tony for stunt, or did you mean to use Ki-61 for the Tony?

Yes that was the model I rescued from you 1/2 built - How long did it sit in that state for ?? 15 years?

I'm glad you reminded me of it actually - I drank so much I thought I built it in 1 night..

It did look good finished - pitty it didnt last - due to the age of the wood the cat jumped up on the wing and snapped it clean in 1/2

Don't forget the 39. I will say that over the years it seems that the plane has been pretty well represented. I do want to build another one of mine but make it into a P-63.

I have to side with Steve. The CA15 is not my cup of tea. However, the Scoda is very nice. I would, however, ditch the funky shrouded tail wheel in favor of something a bit more graceful looking. The Scoda has lines which lend itself well to morphing it into a stunt platform.
As far as the P-39/63 goes, that is a cool platform which also would be easy to stuntify. What's next for me on the design board? Not sure right now. Still need to develop the rib patterns for the Tony. That will eat a couple of days next week to do that and extract the formers for laser cutting.
Steve! Build that Gee Bee Z! Use internal 1/2" foam in the fuselage.

Pat...I finally got some light balsa (from Eliott Scott...San Fran Flyer). I'm looking forward to building the GBZ, but I'll be surprised if it flys well in much wind. Should be fun to fly in light breezes, tho, and it'll look killer.

On the Skoda...agreed on the tailwheel fairing...just looks goofy. Let's not mention the spinner!!! WHAT the heck is that all about? The fuselage x-section is interesting, too. I think a sidewinder would work/look best. Same for the Tony, OBTW.

With both the Tony and La-7, a side winder would be OK. Could even bury a pipe in the La-7.

Awesome, Pat. By far my favorite Japanese warbird. I did a LOT of research into that airplane back in the early '70s! Even won a local IPMS contest with a 1/32nd scale model. LOL!! There was also a radial engine version, the KI-100, IIRC.

Two things, as Chris Mc. mentioned, it is a KI-61.

The other is that the windscreen and sliding portion of the canopy should be constant width (not tapered from front to back). Well, actually, the sliding portion was slight larger than the rear glass on the turtle deck so that it could clear it! LOL!! (never ever thought I would be giving YOU corrections! LOL!!) You have captured the look of the Tony very nicely. If I can be so bold as to make one more suggestion...... cut a bit off the lower edge of the wingtips, sweep them back a hair, they were not really semi circular.

(man, I'm getting brave! LOL!!, but it looks very, very scale otherwise., so might as well go all the way)

I built the Warburton Tony in '71 (slightly different airfoil than the RSM kit). I have saved that American Modeler Magazine ever since 1964.

I also have the plans for a 56" Japanese kit, but have never seen one of those built.. I envy Gordon for the beautiful one he has!

BTW: the P-47 is coming along real nicely. It is going to be a good one! (and I think the ".35" size F-4-F is going to become a profile since I have the .51 size to build. I will follow your profile fuselage methods to build the .35)

Who's design is yours built from? Is it Bill Simon's or Walt Pyron? Looks really nice.

I didn't build this one, but I've got an old Walt Pyron version that I ended up with a couple years ago. I think it was built back in the early 70's. Just for fun I patched up a few minor holes in the old dried-up silkspan and hung an extra Fox .35 on it that I had laying around. I only flew it 5 or 6 times because it's pretty old and dry and it's too neat to kill. Now it just hangs in my shop. It's a really neat model and I'd like to build a "good" one sometime.

Wayne, my Airacobra is my own design. The plane uses the ST. 60 for power. I would like to build a new one, just need to muster up enough mojo to do it. I think the plane flys very well and it's own limitations are based on me being at the handle.

Wow, that's even more impressive!

It must be a pretty good sized plane.

I don't want to mess up Pat's post too much here, how about giving us a new 'Cobra post with specs and a bunch of pics?
