On the ground; When does the Barfing start, but Maiden successful

On the ground; When does the Barfing start,  :'(  Maiden successful. ;D

First CL flight in about 20 years. I built a little OS .10 powered plane with 2.4 GHZ throttle control I di a build thread  on several other sites on the plane and 2.4 GHZ handle.  http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/control-lines-231/11501736-os-10-trainer.html

Got the test flight in today. I was out by myself, flying buddy did not show. So it was a good chance to test the stooge. Worked like a champ. Perfect releases. The restraining line slipped off smooth as silk.

Had some problems with throttle rod not being adjusted properly. I was able to adjust that with the few tools I had with me, i.e. needle nose pliers. My 20 + year old igniter (nicad) died, but I used my panel supply by the 12v starter battery to light the plug.

I failed to hydrate properly before leaving the house, just coffee, had not drank a drop of water. I was sweating like a pig and dripping by the time I got my lines out and set up. heart rate and respiration up to much. To stubborn to slow down and rest awhile.

First 2 or three attempts to take off ended up not enough concrete runway area and ran into the grass at the end and just sat there. So I kept changing my angles in relation to the available concrete till I had enough run room. I was trying to stand in such a position that I would not wit the Light pole that was there when I came around. Also I had to avoid the concrete parking blocks. With out a helper it was just trial and error. And the most important thing I did not want to hit was my own car!!!!!! HB~> HB~> LL~

Own the the 3rd or 4rth try I got airborne. Was almost surprised, but I quickly back peddled to insure enough room before coming around.

Now the actual flight report.

#2 The airplane yawed outwards like crazy on take off rolls, increasing the take off roll.
After the first lap I noticed I had significant line tension, much more than I expected for such a small plane. It was yawed out more than needed in level flight. Remedy reduce the engine offset and the move lead out guide forward.

#3 At full throttle the airplane was hunting up and down, maybe 5' up and down excursions. Manageable, but uncomfortable. At around half throttle the hunting almost completely stopped. So that is were I spent most of my flight time.

#4 I counted my lap times with the one thousand and one, one thousand and two method, and at 1/2 throttle I was getting 8 second laps. At full song I was counting about 6 second laps.

#5 At full song and a maybe 3 or 4 minutes into the flight I explored the control response with some full up elevator. Slow and no were near enough elevator. I will move the elevator ball link in all the way.

#6 When I could tell the that I was just about out of fuel. I went to full throttle and waited. cut out about two laps later. Ran out of up elevator on the glide down so landing was a bit nose down. No damage.

now #1 I was not properly prepared for physically for this little adventure. insufficient hydration, over heated before I even got the engine started. Wearing my back brace helped with my back but also was even hotter.
I started to get dizzy pretty quick, but stuck it out. As soon as the plane was on the ground so was I. Went to my knees, and then onto my back. The world was spinning, I was real nauseous and just hoping I could manage roll to my side if I started barfing. I was actually a little scared at that point that I would throw up and be unable to clear my breathing. My wife has informed me I will never be out like that by myself again. She will go next time, in case a flying buddy does not show She can at least call 911. mw~ mw~ mw~ mw~ mw~

Biggest mistake was trying this with no else there.  n1

But you know what It was fun. I will try again. This was my first CL flight in about 20 years. ;D ;D ;D ;D

From the pictures, it looks like it would be way nose-heavy. Balance at 15-20% back from the LE and it should respond to elevator. Then, hang it from (both) leadouts and adjust the LO's until it'd down 2 deg. at the nose. Lay it upside down on a table and see that the outboard tip hits the table gently > firmly, but not violently. This is called "bench trimming". Just do it!

Howard lost his last ImpAct from flying on a hot day and getting dehydrated. Gator Aid might not be the best solution, but it does work pretty well. There are low sugar varieties, but some contain fake sugars that are disagreeable to some (me). Coffee, of course, is not a good idea, as the caffine dehydrates. But you probably know all that. I pretty much don't like water unless it's dangerously cold. I take a little cooler with some blue ice blocks and several bottles of Gator Aid and/or water when I go flying, both for myself and my buddies. Today was hot enough to need it, but we packed it in before I needed it.

Get it trimmed, get to where you can do some tricks to help with the dizzies, and you should get through it ok. Sorry about the back brace. How about physical therapy instead?  H^^ Steve

Yeah Steve, I thought for sure it would be nose heavy. Maybe flat plates need the cg even more forward than is normal for CL? I am going to have to add some lead up front.

I used a bellcrank I already (3") had. It is the right size for a 35 or bigger plane, but to big for this one. But this plane is a recycle of other planes and parts. The wing is a stab from a large RC and the stab is a stab from a slope glider.

I also think I am going to enlarge the elevator.

I Am taking your words of wisdom about hydration to heart. My wife has already laid down the law with no wiggle room about that mw~

I have always taken liquid with me flying. I just did not think this time. Next time out I am taking a ice water jug out that always accompanies me flying and sure should have this time. I can also carry a few bottles of other drinks (no no not alcohol) in it.

When I can get the plane capable of real basic aerobatics then I can stop spinning or and reverse for a bit.

I am hoping to try again next Saturday.

I intend to bring up physical therapy with the pain management DR. this Wednesday when I go back. I feel like I am loosing every ounce of strength I ever had in my back, maybe aquatic based so as not to cause more even damage.

But I still had fun. ;D

As I stated on the Brotherhood forum,  this time of year never go fly by yourself.   Also have plenty of water.  Save the other stuff for after the flying.   Or as one that had to be driven home from a contest learned,   One or two bottles of water, then maybe a Gaterade.

The wife informed me she will go with me in the future in case there is no one else there. Now at the rc field there is always, always someone else there.

With her with me that means I can get some pics and video. And beside I really do enjoy her with me.

if you were not feeling well why not throttle back and land?  The worst would have been a broken prop.

Anyway good show keep it up.

You are very correct Dave. I had that ability, don't know why I did not. I don't think I was real clear headed even before getting airborne.

Taking my thermos (about 2 or 3 gallons) with ice water and a can of coke from now own. I just forgot this time. Won't happen again.
