Can one fly their real airplane in during the week at all?  Before or after normal contest/fly-in hours?

Mike - I believe that the field is closed to full scale aircraft but best to check with Triple Tree.

What do you fly?

Son’s Cherokee 140.  A bud’s Vashon Ranger.  I took my 120 over there for a regular fly-in a few months ago.  Really couldn’t bring a plane in that though!

I seem to recall them saying it was closed for the event, but couldn’t find that again, so just hoping.  Fingers crossed timing works out!

Didn’t know you had a 120.
Tell me about it.
I have one also - my second favorite plane.

Kind of an interesting barn find…

Never restored or modified.  Has about 1000 hrs total, airframe and engine.  Still no electrical, have to hand prop her.  See if you can spot what makes her quite rare and unique…

Agree, WONDERFUL planes.  My favorite for tailwheel instruction.

May have noticed it’s a “NC” number, cool, grandfathered… but nope.  Other end of the plane.

Yes, what’s that device just aft of the prop?

Mine is a 1946, tail number N77335.
Full electrical, metallized wing.
Upgraded to a C-90 engine.
I learned to fly taildragger in it - boy, what an experience!
My previous plane was a Piper PA 28-151.

My favorite plane is my 1946 Globe Swift, serial number 11.
I’m presently rebuilding the landing gear actuators.

Bingo!  A Beech Roby prop, mechanically adjustable in flight.  It’s just cool!  Actually does give me a climb and cruise prop in one.

Very original, no electrical still, and the doors work!

Never flown a swift, but find them SUPER cool, bravo for owning and caring for one!

Mark,
Will there be power available on site to charge batteries? I will bring my charger but need 120AC wall power to operate. Plan is to fly OTS with my Ringmaster.

I’m pretty sure that there is 110 VAC right at the field.

Mark,
What OTS scoring system do you plan on using PAMPA's or GSCB? What is the bonus for no flaps?

I've only read the PAMPA rules once but I didn't see any reference to allowing a modification for electric motors. I have a Brodack Ring Master that I am going to build with an electric  power system and would love to compete in Old Time Stunt. I only fly electric these days so I thought I wouldn't be able to enter the Ring Master. If it is allowed I'd like to know where to find specific rules regarding electric power sources. I appreciate any clearification as I was pretty sure electric was not allowed.

There are no restrictions on the powerplant. You can use  an electric motor and mount it as necessary as long as the modifications are not intended to improve the aerodynamic performance or overall appearance. I have seen numerous Ringmasters with electrics fly in OTS. Usually someone inserts a firewall mount where the back of the engine mount cutout was. It's a little tricky to fit enough battery between that and the LE of the wing, but you only need a pretty small battery, it only takes about 2.5-3 minutes to fly the entire OTS pattern.

Prohibited modifications are things like sheeted leading edges where there was just a LE spar, extending the tail moment, making the airfoil thicker or a different shape, movable flaps etc. Also prohibited moving the landing gear so it is near the CG to prevent the endless bouncing.

Most people are not that hard over about a goofy fun-fly event like OTS, while you can definitely get yourself kicked out of you make huge modifications, people are not going to be out there looking to DQ you. Electric in OTS has been the source of some disagreement over the years but it is certainy not prohibited as of 2023.

Don,
As Bert has stated there is no restriction on power choice in either the PAMPA rules or the GSCB rules.  Also there is no points penalties for using any modern type of power (FOX same as electric or 4stroke). As for the battery to fit on the Ringmaster check the HobbyStar packs (https://www.rcjuice.com/lipo-batteries.html). I have found that they have two packs that fit in the nose of the Ringmaster where the IC fuel tank fits. I have been using the 5S - 1800mah that fits (~72mm long). I have a BadAss 2320 - 820kv, set for 9650rpm turning a 9 1/2 x 7 APCE P prop. If you want to use a 4S - 2200 ThunderPower Pro lite will do the job but you need to cut into the leading edge to get it to fit and get the CG around 1 1/4" back from the leading edge. Brodak has an electric conversion kit that will work. I like the shorter packs as you can keep the leading edge solid.

Thanks for the info. I live in Minnesota and there aren't any organized events in MN for OTS. I don't want to make a long road trip just to find out that I built it wrong. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Don,
The reason any type power plant was allowed was to encourage participation. The idea was to see the old designs flying not to see the old engines flying. Yes, there is a bonus points for running spark ignition, diesel and for no flaps (no flap bonus cause everyone would then be flying 1952 Noblers i.e. the Brodak kit). There is a slight difference in bonus points and maneuver scoring between the PAMPA rules and the Garden State Circle Burns rules but the maneuvers are all the same as well as the flight level and entry/exit points of the maneuvers.

Good Heaven's Dennis!  Why would you ever want to resist in advance!!!!  Surely you can wait until somebody spots the modifications..Right! n~ n~ n~ n~ n~ n~

p.s.  Love the chatter above re the old Cessnas!  Broke my cherry on 120s when I was a tot and dad took me up for my first "lessons" at "Fancher Flyways" at the Renton, Washington airport!  Alas, the '20s were soon replaced by the shiny new and modern 140s and I had to go high brow...darn!

Ted,
Spell check can't fix finger dyslexia. But I was at the Joe Nall field yesterday and found out no pre-registration is needed. Looks like we will have great weather for Friday's events.

Best,    DennisT
