Stuka stunt engines?

 Has anyone any experience getting engines from him? Either new, reworked or engines sent to be reworked?

If you want to buy a reworked engine from Leonard, he's pretty fast. If you send an engine to get reworked, quite the opposite. He does them in batches, obviously, so may not get around to a customer engine for awhile. Might be best to phone him, at least to confirm that he got your email. There have been problems with his email, as it changed awhile back.

Not many SSW engines here in the NW, except the Magnum/ASP .53, which are pretty useful as a smaller/lighter replacement for the ST .60bb. Pat Johnston says it runs the same, same grunt, same props, but smaller and lighter. Mark has one in his Avenger, Randy had one in his USA-1, Pat had one in a Shark 45, and I have one on the test stand. Nice for a big Classic like a Shark 45, USA-1, etc.    Steve

  I sent a TT .36 in to be worked, and ordered a new Magnum/ASP .52 or .53.   Plan to put the .53 in a Sig Magnum.   Just wondering what his time frames were like.  Slow to respond to email for sure, even after they are read. Kinda wanted them for this flying season, but maybe I will make other plans!

Wow, a Magnum in a Magnum?  Should be killer combo for sure with way more power than the old ST .46 or 60.  Send me photos when finished.

   Well Mike, 

I built the Magnum close to 20 years ago.  It has been in mothballs most of that time, and survived several moves.    It started out with an OS .46 SF, but discovered it was not nearly enough, especially at my altitude  (5300').  So I just dropped a .46 AX in, and it is doing much better.  I got 2 flights tonight, with perfect engine runs.  I think the MAg .52 would help it out though.  The .46 likes the 12.375 x 3.75 APC, but I bet I could get more over the top line tension with the .52.   (that is if it shows up!)   

 Great flying plane.  Better than I am for sure.  But I am continuing to practice.   Could probably use a re-finish at this point, but the dope has help up pretty well considering.

Rich, what's your setup for the 46AX?  Is it an AX or an AXII?

It is an AX.  I just swapped the old .46 SF needle and venturi (the small one).  I like the old stock SF needle arrangement with that rotating nipple to angle back toward the tank.  The engine was a direct swap, and I am still using the old SF muffler.  The AX is a very strong engine.  It is running basically flat out, but I get just a touch lean for 2 laps before it dies.
