probably not misssing a lot - these old speed planes seem to be the hot collectors items at the moment - I have seen some go into the thousands just recently - might be just a phase??

You are right collectors are crazy.  Point in fact...I sold a set of 10ft uncovered wings for a Hobie Hawk glider on Ebay for $754.00.   Buyer and seller are both happy ;D

Yep, I would just chalk it up to a "market trend".

No, market trend has nothing to do with it. Obviously the buyer is a collector, he wanted the item so he paid for it. We may think it an extravigant price, but he didn't.

I collect engines, in particular,Fox Engines. I have now got one of each Fox 2-Speed engine produced. A while back there was a 2-speed .19 on the bay. The going price for this should have been no more than $75.00. Well it was quite a bit more than that, $250.00 to be exact. I bid -- I won -- I paid. Now I pose this question, "Is the 2-Speed series worth more now that I have them all"? Simple answer --- YES.

The simple truth is if you want it bad enough you will pay to win.

Thats my opinion.

G-Man,

I don't disagree at all with your assumptions.  However, when the price for certain items rise (or fall), and continue to do so, it is a "market trend".  Those old speed planes brought next to nothing not too long ago on da bay.  But, collectors got wind, or caught an interest in them, and now the prices are much higher overall.  Sadly, it happens to just about everything.  Sentiment, nostalgia, even egos, drive the prices for "collector" items.

Yes, if someone wants it, and has a fat wallet, they will pay whatever they need to because they can.  No argument, no complaints.........

That is crazy, the buyer must have bought them for their collector value because the Hobie Hawk was just a average slope plane.  Regardless of what Hobie Alter said about it, he knew a lot more about surf boards and catamarans (sic) than he did about model airplanes.  The plane had some bad habits that if the pilot was not aware of could lead to very bad results.

I guess all of it makes more sense than a 160,000 dollar bottle of wine.
