Title: Strange bidding on eBay
Post by: Robert Zambelli on March 23, 2017, 12:22:03 PM
As many of you know, I am selling a huge number of engines on eBay to raise money for John Brodak's museum.

At present I have a number of items listed but I'm really puzzled at the response.

There is a very nice Madewell 49, #122404633215  that is bid up to $4.50.

In the same time frame, a small assortment of Cox parts, #361931913044 is bid up to $16.50.

Makes no sense to me - Are Cox parts really that valuable?   ???  ???

Could be wrong time of year for listing.  I haven't listed anything lately because I lost money last items I listed.

Bob ,a Philadelphian who collects vintage or antique engines "MUST HAVE" one of those in his collection because it was made in Philly. To another guy it's just some dumb old sinker weight that you can't get parts for......PhillySkip

As you noted on the auction it is missing the timer. Most people want them complete. Want to raise money? Sell "silkspan"! Problem solved.

The Madewell 49 engine shows up quite often on E-Bay.  Those which were run on glo are most likely worn out, because they didn't last very long.  Engines for spark ignition also do not do well on E-Bsy.  Fewer and fewer people want to run them.

I've noticed that the market for spark engines will only bear a certain volume on eBay -- prices vary widely, and when there's a lot for sale the prices go down.

I assume that there's only a few collectors out there and that they're on budgets.

Great info, Guys - thanks for your input.
Oh well, someone will get a nice Madewell.
Profits go to the museum no matter what.

For what it's worth, I've already raised over $70,000.00!

eBay buyers - those who collect are gradually evolving to the kids of the 60s and 70s who owned small displacement engines in their Cox , Wen-Mac and other marques model airplanes and tether cars. Some owned them in gas R/C cars and trucks. These are getting the attention now. Madwell 49s ? Old guys stuff. Unfortunate.
Witness lower bids on Anderson Spitfire 60 and 65 and Super Cyclones.
I'm caught in the middle.
Now, I'll sit by and wait for a Dooling 61. Perfect n.i.b. and excellent were bringing 1K just a few  years back. They're down 30% and dropping ; albeit at a slower pace.

If that Tee Dee engine in the Cox stuff is good it'll be a super bargain for someone!
I'll post about it on the Cox forum.

Thanks Terry and to all who have responded.  #^  #^

Glad to hear about the desirability of small engines.

Between Cox, Wen-Mac, McCoy, OK Cub,  Gilbert, Baby Spitfire, Comet, Fox, Atwood and K&B infant I should be listing around 75 or 80 of them soon.
They all belong to John and all proceeds will go to the museum.

Welcome, Bob.
I've also notified the .049 Collector's group on Yahoo - hope you can get decent bids on everything.

I recently just took a beating on a fabulous OS 61 SF Long Stroke of mine. I did okay on my OS BX-1 FSR 1.08 with full muffler pack and adapter. Two Moki 51 CL stunts of another guy, for $395 and $350 respectively. No rhyme or reason with Ebay.

I just sold a little batch of engines on the bay including four high value sparkles.  The market and prices were very soft.  Almost sure I lost 20%.  Could be time of year-could be interested buyers are ageing and selling out.  I think I'm done 'giving' engines away.  The strongest buyers seem to be outside the states.

Well, if people want small engines, this should get their interest.

The should go on the Bay in a few weeks.

I know it is a PITA but break that group into smaller chunks.... Many of the guys I know on the Cox forum and other places, that love these jewels, are "all in" for under $100 auctions ---but balk at anything that commands above that

And please do show any mufflers if you have them

Hi, Fred - thanks for the advice.
Yes, I plan to list them as smaller lots.
Quite a few of them are in relatively good condition and will be listed accordingly.
Many of course are parts engines.
The only muffler I have is on one of the Gilbert 07s.

In any case, it will be most interesting to see how things shake out.

A couple of years ago good sparkies started dropping in price, Then they slowly began to rise again. I am talking about Spitfires, Super Cykes, and Orwicks. All of those are still bringing good money for clean ones. I think there were a lot of collectors that passed and all of their engines went on the bay. The supply was greater than the demand. But now it seems they are coming back, although once in a while one goes for far less than it should, or at least what the market is.

A friend of mine asked me if I had ever sold anything on the bay. I said SELL!

I have been trying to buy up some cox engines to use with a group of kids from broken homes, and  was shocked that Cox engines and parts are worth gold,I started selling of a few of my four strokers to fund the projects with the young ones,if i had known back in the 70s what they would be worth today i would have held on to them,I have paid more for a few golden bees and black widows than i  got for a OS 91 surpass on e bay

In as much as there are millions of Cox engines sitting around in benches and closets, the parts aren't really all that valuable for the standard stuff.  But I'd imagine that what drove up the price on that engine lot is the Spook engine.  The aluminum backplate Spook engines aren't exactly rare, but they aren't exactly common either.  If I didn't already have one, I probably would have bid on that lot just to get the Spook engine.
