Stories and Pics of Jack Sheeks Me-109 G
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:57:37 PM »
I have the plan for Jack Sheeks Me-109G as Wallpaper on my computer.  I just love it and am thinking hard about building her.  I would love to hear from anyone that has built her, seen her fly, or has any pics of one.  How does she perform?  If its like any of Jacks ships, she does ok! LOL

HI Glenn,

If it is the I-Beam that shows a ST .46, I have those plans, too, and have often thought about building one.  it is NOS. 30 legal and looks like it should be a great flying model!

Several years ago I built his Classic legal ME-109 (actually published in early 1970) that has a C tube wing and I used a Fox .35 in it.  It flew pretty well!  Ended up with a friend who took up C/L for a while, but he went back to R/C.  Don't know what he did with it!

Hi Dennis,

Several have told me that the FW-190 might be the very best of Jack's planes.  Jim Lynch from TN flew one at the NATS years ago, a beautiful model!.  Jack told me there was a LOT of the Airon in the FW-190 so I checked both plans and made templates for the ribs for both.  Airfoils are identical, the FW-190 is slightly longer in root chord.

Too many planes, not enough balsa! LOL!!

I'm definitely a retread hack for sure just coming back after about 25 years away but I did get a Ringmaster in the air last year and hopefully gave some amuzment  to Jack, Clancy and the rest of the crew in Indy... If I could only find the child's toy pan Jack calls out for the cowling I'd be golden..... maybe my daughters wouldn't miss it VD~ I think they actually have a metal pot about the right size for that plan...How lucky could I get LL~ LL~ LL~

If I ever get to a wood lathe, I'm going to turn a buck and make a fiberglass cowl for it.  Before I retired, using the wood lathe was not a problem.  But I don't have one of my own.......  :'(

I just talked to Jack on the telephone.
Jack said the ME-109 G with a ST-46 was a very good stunt plane.  He said that if a new model he designed would not do a good pattern, then he would not have it published.

Jack sold the ME-109 G to another modeler to use as a practice plane.  One comment Jack made was that after 1200 to 1500 flights the wing center section failed and the plane was lost.  That modeler later became the NATS Champion.  Jack does not remember his name.  He says to reinforce the wing center section of the I-Beam to strengthen the wing.

Hi all....what a great bunch of responses!  First, Clancy: thank you so much for asking Mr Sheeks for me.  Just having my name mentioned to him makes me feel like I met a movie star or something!  I wonder if I could get his autogragh!

Do you think the Os La .46 would be a good replacement for the ST.46, or should I look at something with a little more grunt?

And for all you FW 190 guys.  I have looked at that ship often, but with the Spitfire/Hurricane, etc., it just isn't scale enough for me.  It is built around the "stunt formula" and is therefore far too stretched out for me.  I know its way cool, but it's not in the same leaque as the 109 (let the fight begin!). LOL

Does anyone have any pics of either FW190 or the (please please please) ME-109?  I would love to see some.

It ain't a real wood lathe, but I have a Smithy 3 in 1..... could probably do it on that. It actually works now, I also have an 11" Rockwell lathe I need to put back together after three moves....

I think I have the ME109 article from FM, I could try to scan that if you want

I don’t recall Jim saying he modified Jacks design. I was there when Jack signed the wing as seen in the photo above. Don’t recall Jack saying anything that Jim bashed it.

Was there a profile version? I think Scott Condon said his was a Sheeks design but my memory could be questionable. It was a decade or so ago at Brodaks.

Here's a picture of mine in the building stage. It did take a lot of wood! I made it electric. Unfortunately, lost it on the first flight.

BMJR has a kit of Jack's ME-109.  I have a test build kit I got from Brian Malin (BMJR), but unfortunately I never found the time to build it.  A friend of mine (Keith Palmer) built the kit and it came out quite nice.  Flies well too with a Fox .35.
