FWIW: a story.
We went on a cruise. When we returned, my wife sat me down and told me that her pearls were gone and they disappeared from the ship. She had filed a notice with the ship. She never thought our cabin guy might've taken them but they were gone.
Ah well, 'so it goes'.
Two days later, while unpacking suitcases and re-nesteing the suitcases, she pulled out a case that did not make the trip.
There, in pristine condition, were the pearl necklace and earrings. In a suitcase that she had started to packe and rejected as not big enough. They never made the trip.
The point of the story: it is possible that the missing jewelry isn't missing, rather it might be in a place it shouldn't be.
