STILL SANDING

Well.........................................I'm still sandindinging.........it's getting smootherererer.........
looks the same as before............I just found another bad spot taking this picture.....DANG!!

I've only added a couple ounces so far. Most of the paint keeps getting sanded off........someone just told me not to worry about weight because those two 40s will haul it around.......but I keep thinking about holding on to it........my Legacy at 56 oz. w/ST 51 pulls plenty strong!!

Big Art seems to be having trouble with those two B.40s..........I've gotten two emails from him....not too positive in tone...I got the impression he was saving the hammer for tool of last resort..........hmmmmmmm....PLEASE don't ask what the problem is.....he told me but I didn't understand what he was talking about.

I'm about 60 hours into this finish. Sparky could have had it done by now. with 86 flights on it to boot.

I feel your pain. I hate to sand, which is why my planes look like $***. 

It's too bad smaller planes don't fly as well as the bigger planes (IMHO). They are easier to work on.

I do hope that you're now at the stage that you are only painting and sanding the trouble spots and not still the whole plane!

No, Bill........not the whole plane....Now I'm dribbling drops of primer into pin holes..........
Problem is.........just when I think I've gotten them all-I find more.....at some point I'll give up on getting them all........I guess it doesn't help that I wear a magnifier when I'm doing this......on the upside the plane should look perfect to the middleaged eyes of the judges....
my finger tips look shriveled.

You should see it though.....it's starting to shine!!!...woohooooooooo

Looking real nice. Compared to prior photos, it's much glossier. Keep up the good work, and remember - - Sanding is the only part of finishing that reduces weight!

Randy Smith says that too much pull can always be trimmed out as long as the weight is kept reasonable (or did he say light?).

I wish i could remember the group that sang the song with the words "I'm still sanding....."  or was it "standing"?  Dont matter, it fits your task at hand Frank. You are a glutton for punishment. When is it "good enough"? do you just know? or is it a compromise between the time spent, and the end result?

You are making me keep sanding my plane, and I wanted to stop days ago. I'll get more sandpaper today. Thanks for the good example man.

Its gonna be beautiful tho, I can tell. Yours always are.

The idea is to get the surface scratches down to the finest grit you can. The less imperfections in the surface the greater the shine. Light reflects best from a smooth surface. So you go through the grits. After 400 grit you're starting to polish the surface not change it's shape. At 600 you're getting rid of the 400 grit scratches, and getting shinier. At 1000 grit you're getting rid of the 600 grit scratches, shinier yet. Then 1500. Next 2000. Then you get out the polish. You can quit anytime you want.

The oil wipes off easier too.

There really isn't any need to go that far except that each plane aught to be better than the last. IMHO.

What is the problem with your B-40's.  I have two of them and they are so dependable.  Just have to remember to warm them up before an official flight.  Get two or three flip start most of the time.  Running the new Thunder Tiger 11-4.5 prop on them now.  Not flying the B-40 now as the ARF Oriental is being rebuilt and completely finished.  It will be ARC's from now on so controls cqn be replaced and decent covering put on them.  But, I am anxious to see the completion of that twin of yours.  DOC Holliday

Hey Frank, she is really looking good. I usually give up after 400 grit, but as you say each one suould be better. I am sheeting the wing, i am using Bill Little's way o f wetting the sheets first then forming them to the wing and pinning them. A new way for me and it's fun. I have learned so much from Stunt Hanger and people lie you and so many others. Puts the fun back in it for me as i work alone mostly.  Ron.

Ron, I sure wish I could see a picture of your LA HEAT. You're currently sheeting the leading edges?.................................This plane sure is a long build isn't it? I have mine ready for  white paint (the base coat). It's quite likely that I'll bee able to post a picture of a painted model next week.

I'm ready to complete the refinishing of the Trixter Barnstormer. I forgot what "fun" sanding is. I checked my dope supply. Most of it has gone bad. I checked the prices on Sig and Brodak dopes. No wonder people are resorting to Rustoleum. I ordered a pint of clear, a pint of thinner, and 2ea. 4oz jars of color. That should do the fuselage. The wings are Monokote. The other Barnstormer will have different wingtips.
