...Nudder question...
« on: November 15, 2013, 10:21:55 AM »

I am thinking about a piece of flat steel about 1/2" thick 6"wide and about 12"-15" long for a weight for a stooge.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

My stooges are pieces of 3/8" plywood about 18" x 30", they work fine on grass without slipping and without extra weight or stakes.

BUT that's with a 52 ounce plane with an LA-46 running correctly.  If I adjust that same engine lean on that plane, it starts dragging the stooge.

If you're on pavement then use a weight, and put something on the bottom to enhance friction.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

The stooge I purchased from Tom Morris measures 1/2 x 9 x 14, (steel plate), and has an anti skid fabric stuck to the bottom. Absolutely no troubles at all holding my SV 12 with PA 65, either on grass or pavement.

Your steel plate weighs between 10 and 12.75 Lbs...personally I would prefer one that weighs about 20 lbs...a 6 inch by 24 inch plate 1/2 in thick would give you 20 3/4 lbs...better I think!

If the issue is that you are flying off pavement, you could use 3" Tapcons ... you would need a rechargeable drill.  A lot better than dragging a steel plate around.

I modeled my stooge after the onebrodak sells. I attached it to a 16" x 16" piece of plywood, holes at each corner. I use 6" spikes to hold it in the ground. It works great. I don't fly off blacktop. Most people will get up set if you pound stakes into their parking lot plus how do you get them back out?

Tapcons go in with a hex driver on a drill.  Really just big hex head dry wall screws. When you are done you back them out. Next time you go there you won't be able to find the holes.
