Steve Wooley's Fierce Arrow
« on: August 17, 2007, 11:49:18 AM »
Does anyone have a picture of Steve's Fierce Arrow from the 1958 era that shows the paint scheme & color? I've been looking for a picture of this model for several years without success. I hope it was built before Steve purchased his 55 gallon drum of green paint.  ;D

Any leads for a picture would be greatly appreciated. Here's a picture from Air Trails showing the model in question. Note the wheel pants and the L.G spreader wire ala the Black Tiger.

Was it actually Steve's?  Looks like he's launching for some one else in the picture. (??)

Bill thanks very much for pointing out that possibility. The 58 Nats analysis in the 1959 AT shows Steve placed 2nd in Sr. Stunt with his Argus. I assumed that the Arrow was also Steve's because of it's rather uncomplicated paint scheme, which Steve was famous for. In any event, It's a better picture of the model I'm interested in.

Hi Y'all,
I grew up near Marietta, Ohio, Steve's hometown and knew Steve from shopping at the hobby shop where he worked.  In 1957 or '58, at a contest at the Parkersburg, WVA airport Steve had an "oops" with the Argus, and yes, it was "Pond slime green", as he described it, and knocked the rudder off on the initial pullout for the wingover.  (Actually, it broke just at the leading edge of the stab.)  He went home, just a few miles, and returned with the Arrow, which, I garuantee you, was NOT pond slime green.  Steve won the KOI the previous year with the Fierce Arrow.  I only had black & white somewhere deep in the magazines, but sold them all to Tom Perry!
I suspect that big Art has some pictures of the Arrow because Steve spent a lot of time with the Adamissions, also, Jerry Phelps more than likely has some pics of it, oooorrr....check with Wynn Paul and his fabulous history of stunt encyclopedias!!
I hope this will lead you to success, I have fond memories of Steve.  I got to talk to him at the Toledo Show the very spring before his tragic death in a sports car race.  :'( :'(
Many blessings,
Will

Will, thanks so much for your informative reply. I will follow up on your leads next week after I get back from a local modelfest event.

I have build 2 - 57 Fierce Arrows over the years. I still have one, although it is now about 20 years old. The design is a fun machine to fly and IMHO looks tremendous in the air. I'd like to build another for a future VSC now that I've retired and I'd like to replicate Steve's version if at all possible. Someone out there must have a picture or two of Steve's model.

Dennis, you're certainly welcome, I hope it helps.  If you end up with a dead end, a call to Billy Werwage might be in order.  He and Steve were like brothers back then.
Blessings,
Will

Check out the glue/paint stains on the front of the leg of Steve's Levi jeans.  Memories.
