Looks like a Van Loo "Chipmunk".
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!

Never met him.  LL~

Here are some notes on it. Feel free to ask questions.
  • The model is Jim Van Loo's Chipmunk as kitted by Walter Umland. Truly, the best kit ever produced.
  • It's not related to SIG Chipmunk. The two are very different models.
  • It uses Brodak 40(APC 10.5x4.5 or Thunder Tiger 11x4.5) for power and it's about as heavy a motor as the model can take. Putting something like 40LA will make the model a dud unless you put 2oz of lead in the tail in which case the model will be 5oz too heavy and will stall in turns.
  • The model handles windy weather well.
  • Final model weight is around 48oz.
  • Lap times are 5.1 on 59'(eyelet to eyelet) lines.
  • The model is responsible for a large stack of trophies in my basement.

That's my secret weapon against the new hot shot pilot from Vermont! Next time you come over, I'll let you fly it. As customary, 4.2 second lap time.  LL~

Nothing like testing the old reflexes in the morning! Ill just slap it down on an ankle low bottom and keep it there  VD~  LL~

In all seriousness though, I would love to fly it. I've been thinking of a new classic plane as my next stunter...if ill ever have time to build it

Let me know when you're back in Burlington. I'll can fly up for a few hours. I'd love to visit your granddad's flying "field of dreams"!

By the way, here are a few hi-res pictures of it:

But it is related to the SIG Chipmunk. SIG kitted the Van Loo Chipmunk with some changes that were necessary for kit production. It was primarily a slightly reduced version. Mike Gretz has a web site dedicated to the Chipmunk and explains the whole story, and is quite interesting. The SIG Super Chipmunk, that most people are familiar with came later.  Try this link:   http://members.zumatel.net/mdgretz/Chipmunk.htm
I have both versions of the SIG kit in my collection, and a copy of Walter's plans. Would like to have Walter's kit if I could find one. Got to talk to Jim Van Loo about it some at an ACE R/C sailplane contest back in the late 80's. I also have the RSM kit of another Chipmunk designed by a gentleman in the northwest who's name escapes me now, but it is a very nice rendition of the airplane. When you think in terms of kits sold, built and flown, the SIG Chipmunk in any version can claim a big chunk of stunt and model aviation history.

Hi Steve,

I live half an hour north of Burlington.  You can fly into KFSO. That airport is 10 minutes from my house and I'll be doing my summer full size flying out of there (once I pass checkride, which I should get signed off for tomorrow).

Just let me know when you were looking to come up, and I'll let grandpa know. We could have a little fun fly in the backyard and maybe a little formation flying  :D

This would be great! I don't think I saw Don at all last year. Since you are the one away from home, let me know when you are back home and we'll figure the day I can come out. Will you have your PPL by the end of this school year?

Cool photos Steve.  I saw your plane on one of the videos I've been up loading. Neat looking plane.
Thanks for playing.

I get home next Thursday, May 2nd. I *should* be signed off for checkride tomorrow, so it looks like I'll just barely make it by the time I get home.

I was just thinking, I don't think I've seen you since the year you won the Mass Cup.

Dan,

Thank you for posting the link! It is indeed a very deep and thorough research on the multiple Chipmunk versions!

  Steve;
Joe Dill is the other Chipmunk design I was trying to think of. RSM makes a kit and it's classic legal. The nose moments are pretty close on all of them, and most were designed with the Fox .35 in mind, but LOTS of SIG Super Chipmunks have been built and flown with ST.46s in them, and in todays engine market, a LA.46 could be tried for more power. I would have to weigh them but I wouldn't think there was a big difference in weight between a Brodak .40 and a LA.40/.46, seeing as both are plain bearing engines.
