I'm building a Brodak Tanager profile that uses bolt on control horns for flaps and elevator. Does anyone sell horns that are better than those thin nylon ones from Dubro? I'm pretty much resigned to make my own, just thought I'd ask before I spend the time. I remember those 2 bolt steel stamped ones we use to use on combat jobs, wish I could find a few of those.

   There are a bunch of "giant scale" RC control horns that are tougher than the usual CG and DuBro clear nylon jobs/

Robart makes some nice bolt on horns that should suffice.  They come in different lengths also.

If you use the ones that Mike suggested, make sure that you really beef up the mounting point to spread the loading.  All the control surface loading is coming through that small plastic mounting plate.  These were standard issue on Ukie 35's and I had one work its way through the balsa at an inopportune moment resulting in one of those sub-grade pullouts.  Other than that, they're great and infinitely adjustable.

Sullivan offers these, and Tower stocks them. If you look at the Tech Notes on all of those above, you'll see that they use 4ea. 4-40 screws to bolt them to your control surface....a lot of weight you don't need. IMO, 2-56 screws would be plenty.  Steve

Any devise that compressed the wood will fail over time. The best bet is to cut out the balsa and install a plywood piece where the horn will go. I use a piece of dowel epoxied in and thin ply over that. The Du-Bro pieces are the best bet for the elevator as they are infinitely adjustable and will last forever.
