Title: Stationary and main flap sizes
Post by: Leester on October 01, 2007, 11:44:59 AM: I am building a wing designed to be 58", IB wing panel is 29.5" with a 23 1/4" main flap and a 4" stationary flap. The OB wing panel is 28.5" with a 23 3/4" main flap and a 2 1/2" stationary flap. I am downsizing this wing to 55" so it will fit in the car. It will be 1 1/2" shorter on each wing panel, keeping the out board flap 1/2" larger what would be the best way to lose the 1 1/2" on each panels flaps ??? ???

I would not proportion, but keep the same linear dimension (4" & 2.5") on the stationary flap.

Irrespective, I would think about reducing the asymmetry to 1/2" as well.

If you are reducing the entire model by 5%, I agree with you but if you are only reducing the span of the wing other issues come into play and I think that 5% is significant. Radical was probably too strong a word but if you are trying to create a version of a plane that you like but needs to fit in a small car, scale the model rather than reduce the span. H^^

Geoff makes a good point, let me offer a similar thought - if you are clipping the wings anyway, why not just make it equal span? I would lobby for 4" stationary flap, though some folks are promoting larger flap area on the o/b side. I have no direct experience with that...

My guess is it's in the 580 to 590 sq.in. range, the fusalage is going to be profile close to the Cardinal in size so I'm hoping that should be OK. I have reduced the Elevators and Stabilizer to the same size as the Cardinal's also. It's beginning to look like I should have just bought a Pick up. LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~
