Title: Static buildup - ZAP
Post by: Keith Miller on January 17, 2014, 05:30:54 PM
Down here in Sunny San Diego, we had great flying weather all morning.  However, the local field had been over-watered and the grass was, well.... soaked!
Rather than tromp around in wet shoes, I took them off to let them dry in the sun.
Flying my Cardinal around I thought I felt this snap on my thumb.  8 laps later I heard the snap and definitely felt it!  An arc was crossing from my handle to my thumb!  We're in a very dry condition this week, and coupled with my bare feet in soggy grass I was getting snapped every 8 laps or so!

Keith,

You may have been better off getting zapped that way, than having the charge build enough to zap through the soles of your shoes...

Been there and done that, tho not in San Diego.

This works well if you need your sinuses cleared! Just by the way, if you fly with bare feet, just use a metal handle, or wind some bare wire around one of the lines and around the handle. The static discharges all the time without the zapping. If there is any lightning around, even far away, just don't fly......Ben Franklin has done that experiment already!

As a kid, I flew with the EZ just (or something like that) handle.  It was red plastic and the adjusting steel cables exited the back of the handle, sat firmly against the palm of you hand as the wire traveled down to the other end of the handle then back out the front.  Very convenient for adjusting the handle to fit your lines and also to...well you know and already said it well...zap.  Often a lot!
