I'll bet you guys thought that Victory is my only red, white and blue model.

I just got to take pictures for the first time of a project I've been working on for 3 years.

Every time I flew one of these planes I was nervous about splattering it. But alack and alas they are all still alive. Altogethr there are over 600 stars on these planes.

The Mustang was #1. Built and painted in 04.
The Pathfinder was #2. Built and painted in 05.
And Victory was built and painted this year. 06.

I am going back to work on my twin engine stunter next week. Let's see.......how shall I paint it?

I'd try something new, like a patriotic scheme or something, being the 4th and all.

What kit is the Mustang? What twin are you building, is it an original design?

Hey Frank,
At SIG you said you were NOT going to stars/stripe the twin. I do remember you talking about some colors but I can't remember which. Do you have any pictures of what the twin looks like?

The Mustang is a Brodak kit. Good flyer but too little and lite for my tastes.

Shirley, I do have a bunch more stars. I have a little surprise to pull as far as the 1/2A Snapper is concerned. I think you guys will get a kick out of it.

The twin is the RSM kit, LA HEAT designed by Bob Whitely. I'm building it verbatim according to the plan. The only change I made is mounting the main gear in the engine nacelles instead of in the wing.

And yes I know I've said that I wasn't going to paint anymore stars, but, shoot, I just really like the way the paint schemes look. So...................................

The LA Heat will be really interesting to see. I've never seen one other than in the ad photo for the kit, which doesn't give you the greatest look at it.
What's the power gonna be?

I have Brodak .40s I'm putting in the plane.
I have it about half constructed.
This morning I'm shaping Stab, elevators,flaps and setting control horns.
I scavenged hinges from a Vector .40 kit. Bellcrank and horns are heavy duty from Windy Urtnowski.

This plane is going to be huge. Here is a picture of the stab with a Cox PT-19 next to it to give you an idea of the size.
The work is going along nicely. I should be able to have it framed up in a couple days.

I like the pic of your sub-assemblies on the table Frank. Looks like fun. Did you build the nacelles at the same time, or build one, then the other? The stab is huge, way cool. Will it be done this season? Cant wait to see it fly.

I built the nacelles at the same time Greg. The tough part is getting them to be a matched set.
I built all the sub assemblies last winter. So today I'm way ahead of the game.
I'm going to get it finished (at least that's the plan) by September. The twin isn't part of my quest to build the perfect stunter. So I don't want to cut into this years coming building season with it. I do want to work on my building and finishing skills with it though.
We have heavy wind and thunder showers heading our way today. So I'm staying in the shop.
Have fun flying and remember we've all been flying pretty steady and already have contests under our belts. If you want to keep up you're going to need to practice, practice and practice some more.

I already know this season is a noncompetitive one for me Frank. I have missed the vast majority of flying time so far this summer. In fact, if I have more than twenty flights in, I'll be suprised. Remember that 3 gallons of fuel I got from you last year? I am on the last quart of the first gallon. Two more to go. On the plus side, I have introduced 4 new comers to Control Line, and they like it.

I will still be ready the next time I see you guys.

two flights this morning, not as much fun by myself.

I have a workbench to prep for some building, if you will excuse me....

What timing ,

ijust started my LA Heat, and now I can see what it looks like in the framing stage. Thank You Frank. I am ging to use Windy's adjustable motor clamps so i can switch motors. I am going to start with ROMAG-36"s, i have Saito .40's and Rojett .40's. What is best to start' Frank or anyone? I installed 1/2" balsa between the motor mounts instead of the maple pieces the plans call for

is this ok? Ineed all the input i can get. This is my first c/l twin

. I have been building 1/3 scale rc the last few years, so i have to reset my thought process concerning wt. and structure and a lot of other things. Many Thanks Ron.

Ron,
This is my first twin also. It sounds like you're on track with it. I used a balsa spacer between the maple bearers also.

As per your motor choice I'd say you should take them out somewhere and run them now. Pick the set that you're most comfortable with and that start well for you.

I followed the plan straight through without variation. It was tempting to make changes but I have no idea how this model is going to balance. I suspect those thick control surfaces and fat rudder are there to put weight in the tail to counter balance two engines.

I didn't trust the strength of the mounting method for the main gear, so I positioned them in the nacelles.

If you have a camera it would be great if you'd post pictures of your progress.

It's o.k. if this won't be a contest season. You fold me once that flying was relaxing for you so that's good enough. You'll make it. I was trying to give you a kick in the butt to get you going flying more. It's therapy.

Not trying to hijack your thread Frank, but I put up only two. I was unhappy with the engine runs. I put a 46LA on my white Cardinal, remember the worm burner? and it leaned out about half way thru the tank like to 40FP did. I am removing the metal wedge tank, and putting on the plastic clunk. I have good runs with that setup. I bet the FP runs better now too. I apprecieate your motivational methods, sometimes I need a boot in the bum to get me moving. Now that I have my stooge reworked and the heavyass white cardinal ready again, I can get back to the business of beating that dasterdly overhead 8.

SO, as not to hijaack your thread, how do you know what kind of run your METAL tanks will give you? Have you tested them already? Will you have room to make a change if you want to? The nacelles look pretty packed. 4oz tanks? Are you going standard vent? uniflow? pressure?

I'm using the same set up on the twin as i have on the pathfinder. Same tank types and engines. The nice thing about picking and sticking to an engine and set up is that you always know what it's going to do in another airplane.

I've been running straight suction on everything I'm currently flying. Uniflow.

Reminds me of Pat Johnston. His last 4 planes have had nearly the same paint scheme. Red, White and Blue with Stars. They all look like this:

Yea, that's the only pic I had with me. And the three you show are the three he's currently flying. There are two others. A larger, 60 sized Bearcat and a classic legal Al Rabe P-51. All with nearly identical paint schemes. We've been kidding Pat that he needs to turn the creativity tap back on.

I am humbled and impressed.
Just this morning I was telling Linda that I was probably one of a few guys in the world to have a set of airplanes. I still think I am. But Pat's planes are way cooler than what I've done so far.
Well my aspirations are high and I'm developing a higher skill level with each plane I build.
I'm going to get there.

I've got about 20 hours into my LA Heat twin stunter since yesterday. It's straight and there is a good foundation for a great finish. My back is getting stiff so I decided to post a couple pictures and call it a day.
While edititng the pictures I realized that the nacelles are on upside down. I'll be sure to get them right before I glue everything in place.

Thankyou Randy and Walter for these inspiring photos. I will try not to disappoint.
