New use for a Lycoming Engine
« on: September 06, 2017, 06:01:31 AM »
I had this old timed out engine, a Lycoming O-235 L2C, lying around so I decided to put it to good use.   y1  y1

Completely gutted, no crank, accessory case, pistons, rods, cam, valvetrain.

Total exterior refinish, all new fasteners and wiring.

I fabricated a dummy shaft with bushings and a flange to mount the glass top, which rotates.

Note that it's a "Redhead"!   LL~   LL~

I'd be worried about hitting my shins on the pushrod tubes. Showed this to wife at breakfast today. Enthusiasm level "low" on idea of anything similar. Maybe a cup holder table from an old McCoy 35?

Hey, that looks like the engine I had in my Lake?

Hi, Charles. The Lycoming I used is a much smaller version of what you had in your Lake.
The O-235 is carburated rated at 105 to 115 HP.
If you had an early Lake, it probably had the Lycoming IO 360, 200 HP.
The later versions were fitted with Lycoming IO 540 engines, at 250 HP.

Hi Scott - What am I gonna do with it? I'm gonna mix up a batch of my world-famous Rain Dirty Martinis and celebrate!

And guys, thanks for all the kind words.

ps: Mike - find yourself an engine and build a table. Remember, it's easier to ask forgiveness that permission! Yes, you're correct about the size. I will order a new top, 10 inches larger diameter.

I like it.
Very well done Mr. Z

Decades ago I did similar with a 1953 Harley Pan head (gutted) eventually it had to go to a friend who always through it was cool

I was not sorry to see it leave to his man shack.
I got very tired of dusting the thing.

Bob, I think it's gorgeous. I bet lovely Miss H was so thrilled when you lugged it into the house Lol.

I gave away a couple of iron 4-bolt 350 Chevy blocks a couple of years ago. Too bad for me, but they were going to be pressed back into service, so it was best for them... and my own lovely Miss H.

OK, Guys - ready for this?

Harriet ENCOURAGED me to built it.   y1

She loves the table!  #^  #^  #^

I will modify it to a larger top - the present one is 30 inches in diameter.

The new top will be 40 inches and I will use the smaller one as a second tier, raised 9 inches above the larger one.

Hi, Fred - the pan head must have made a beautiful table!

I originally wanted to use a gutted Ferrari V-12 block but they can go for upwards of $15,000.00.  ~^  ~^

I like it.
