Stanzel model airplane museum?
« on: March 29, 2017, 01:41:11 PM »
Will be in Austin for vacation in late April.  We will be seeing my graduate school student son at UT.

Always go down to the CAF in San Marcos, but have never been to the Stanzel museum.

Is it worth the trip?

Any other aviation stuff to see there?

I have never been there but I know Dale Kirn has a lot of His planes there and did a lot of work on others for display. He had worked for them for several years flying all over the country demonstrating their control system. Dale had a bunch of his planes here in Salina Kansas museum a while back. He had some real interesting planes and other things. If I ever got close I would go there. Stanzel had some really cool kits from way back.

It's probably worth somewhere between 1 to 1-1/2 hours. There are a few planes, including a couple of Dales. A lot of the history focuses on the toys and other aviation related stuff. The facility is very nice and the docents I interacted with as well as members of the Stanzel family were very passionate about the place. If you're in the area I'd say it's a worthwhile trip.

P.S. We came from the New Braunfels / Canyon Lake area and swung thru Shiner, home to the Spoetzl Brewery and Shiner Bock beer, on the way back. I liked the museum, the rest of the group liked the beer.
