As much as some of the many new drones are being purchased and "flown" by idiots ... well, I'd like to think that - like many things in life - "this too shall pass".
I've been paging through several old magazines recently, searching for a couple of gems, and stumbled across this "scare" from 1972, when many potential collisions between models and passenger-carrying aircraft were in the news. Interestingly, I found a similar report in a magazine from the '50s, Don McGovern reporting in
Flying Models if I remember correctly ...
Is there still hope?
