New York Finger Lakes - Controline is taking off
« on: September 13, 2019, 04:52:48 AM »
We've had a few get-togthers in the New York Finger Lakes area, some dedicated CL flyers have been meeting up and flying lately. We'll be in Canandaigua, NY this Sunday. Post if you're interested and we can fill you in on details.

Chuck. I lived in Binghamton from 1940-1972 and went to many FF and CL Contest in your area and Ithaca. Rochester Ithaca and Binghamton were hot area for CL flying in the 1960’s. Nice to see some activity again in central NYS.

That is really neat, wish it would have been that way when I lived in Liverpool in '62 and '63.  Beautiful area and beautiful people!

Just a bunch of old guys in the finger lakes flying their old control line model airplanes at Canandaigua, New York.
Doesn't get any better than this.

Once again we had a great day of flying. Thanks to Jerry and the Sky Chiefs for providing the smoothest grass circle I've ever flown off of.

A fun time was had by all for sure. We had a little wind and some rain drops at the very end but it was a great event.

Steve Dwyer flew his beautiful silked Fancherized Twister really well.  Flew my Oriental again for S&G's. Needs some trimming to get the squares working but I don't care who you are, there's just something special about the sound of a vintage OS 35S on a 4-2-4 run on a uniflow. It's musical.

I love the smell of castor oil in the morning.

I flew a lot of matches against the T-Square back around 1958–62. The boys from Scranton, Wilkes-Barre Pa had  large numbers of them. I never had one as I was using Quickers at that time.

I've been flying with the Canandaigua folks and loving it. I flew Junior Combat in 58-59 from Ithaca. I remember T-Squares and Quickers; have built a T-Square and plan to build a Quicker for old times sake. They are opposites: the Quicker is fast and agile but easily damaged; the T-Square is slow and clunky but very hard to hurt. Both had their advocates. Ithaca's gang was kitbashing Ringmasters into a flying wing they called the Slasher until the Flite Streak appeared. Lots of happy memories come back with the wonderful aroma of Castor.  --John

John do you remember the contests at Allen Truman Start Park in Ithaca.  I remember a guy named Arrowsmith wind fly a Ruffy through the entire pattern. I may have a picture from then. i will look for it.

That must've happened after I stopped flying at meets; by late '59 I was totally out of the loop. But I remember a Bill Arrowsmith; he was from Rochester. Took First in Open Combat at the 58 Nats, with a T-Square. Let me drop some names from the Ithaca club: Charlie Phillips, Al Smith, Strether "Stretch" Smith, Dave DeSantis. Any of them sound familiar? Any pictures from back then would be wonderful to see.
