Spring type Clothes Pins are assembled wrong!
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:15:03 AM »
During my visit to Marvin Denny's home in April, Marvin showed me that spring type clothes pins are assembled wrong from the factory, for our use.  No Fooling!!

See the attached picture.

The top row are as received.  Big ends of each wood piece is on the working end. Interference!  Also the clamping area is not at the tip.

The second row, as assembled per Marvin's directions.  Small ends of each wood piece is on the working end.  Less interference and as a bonus 50% more clamping force!!

To fix yours, just remove the metal spring, reverse the wood parts and reassemble the clothes pins.  Now isn't that better?

Marvin, thanks for sharing your knowledge and ideas,
Clancy

I guess we keep inventing things.  I have several coat hangars with the spring type clothes pins.  As a kid Mother kept wondering where her clothes pins were going.  Then she came into my bedroom one day.  I had to buy her another package of them.  Yes I remember when clothes were hung on a clothes line in the back yard to dry.  I think they smelled so much better back then.

somones yanking your chain....

why would a clothes peg have a smooth surface to hold the item on a line ?  the Hole that is created when the peg is closed in your "wrong" assembly, is designed to clip on the clothes line - given that it is usually a rope or cord this makes a lot of sense...... S?P

but for OUR modelling use  - you might be right.....  y1

I use to do that with clothes pins back in the sixties, but had failed to remember.  I used a hacksaw blade to make a new grove for the spring clip to ride in.  Thanks for the reminder.

Ho many years since you've helped hang clothes on an out door line.  I remember the nylon/plastic coated lines Dad used to put up for Mother. H^^

I've been doing that for years. You can also flip the wood pieces inside out and make long clamps out of them for clamping.

Is the third row how you described?

This give us a third assembly technique.

Factory: Jaws parallel when closed, Depth available 1 1/4 inch.

Marvin Denny: Jaws parallel at 1/16 inch open, depth available 1 1/8 inch.

Peter Ferguson: Jaws parallel at 1/8 inch open, depth available 2 1/4 inch.
