Spotted Balsa
« on: October 10, 2016, 09:22:33 PM »
I ordered some 1/16th 6 Lb. balsa and some of the sheets are covered with brown spots. I guess it's a natural part of the wood but is it structurally ok to use? The supplier is also a builder, did he sell me his B stock?

Thanks,
MM

It has been my experience that when I order light wood I get some spots like that, unless you specify contest grade and the supplier has contest grade and you are willing to pay the premium attached to it. I have not noticed any structural difference when I use the splotchy stuff for sheeting.  Where did you get it from?

Got it from Stunthanger hobby/Tom Morris. Didn't know there was a contest balsa option.

The wood is fine.  The 'staining' is fairly common and only matters if you are finishing in a way it shows.  Yes there is also contest grade which costs a little more.  It is graded by weight and sometimes grain but not usually coloration.  I think some of the better wood is more likely to have a little staining than the harder stuff.  Just an observation.

Somebody I know ordered wood from SH Hobby and said it got shipped direct from Bud Nosen. My suspicion is that it might be from Tom or Bud, depending on what Tom has in stock.  H^^ Steve

What Bob Hunt said.  If you don't send it to Bob I will be more than happy to take it of your hands.
