I noticed some sponge sanding blocks at the hardware store. These blocks are a sponge with with a rough surface for sanding. They are typically used for sanding drywall compound. The finest I found was 150 grit. This would be fine for basic shaping. Anyone know of a finer grit version? What brand and what grit? Ideally your 320 grit or even 400 would be nice. These to me would be wonderful for the sheeted wings that I am doing. You could sand and not worry about flat spots because they seem to have just enough give to keep from getting flat spots but still act as a block.

I don't know of any, off hand, but something similar that could be used are cork sanding blocks and pads. I've seen them online but haven't had a chance to test them myself.

Matt Home Depot and Lowes have them down to 220 or greater. Then most auto parts stores have them on down to 400 and foam sanding pads all the way to 5000. I remember you telling me there maybe wasn't a Depot or Lowes in your city so maybe you better go right to Advance or O' Reilly auto parts.

Have you tried any auto body and paint suppliers. They usually have these items.

In the past I have used a piece of spongy foam...like upholstery foam rubber.
Then put sandpaper around the foam and used the palm of my hand to move it around.
Works great for surfaces that are already flat.

the real beauty of these sponge sanding pads is the tendency to sand through on corners and ribs is greatly reduced, I've used them both on my planes and in the guitar shop for many years and refuse to be without them, so go gettem Matt!
