I have completed a working copy of the subject Warbird. Due to the really disappointing response to the last two subjects I am hesitant to do the final version unless there is a good response for this one. Looks great on the rough copy!
Spitfire Mk 1a. Span 52.5, Area 525, again for a good 40 to 46 engine. Should be a great flying model!

count me in, Don!
Thanks

I would take this one for sure.

Where do we get a look?

What, Wayne? U don't know what a Spitfire Mk I looks like? LOL!! You know it's good, you have seen Don's plans and seen the models fly, i am sure! (J/K)

Yep Bill, I've got copies of most of Don's stuff, all very nice designs. Always like to take a peek at something new though. ;D
-
Don, I'm working on the Hell Diver. All framed up. Need to do a few little things and put all the big parts together. Haven't been able to work in the shop due to allergies and respiratory infections. Hope to have it off the bench in a week or so.
Looking really good though.

Don, I've always thought the short nose of the MkI, et al, was an issue with getting the balance right. Consequently, all my dreaming and rough drafting has focused on the Mk iX/Mk XVI.
How much liberty have you taken with the moments and areas?

If he is keeping with the rest of his line, it should have a scale (short in this case) nose.
I'm building his T-6/SNJ. It was designed around a 36-40 size motor. Dons instruction sheet call for 4oz of weight in the nose. It has a short nose moment, as most radial motored airplanes do.
My answer to this situation is, rather than put dead weight in the nose, bolt on a Super Tiger 51 which is 4 oz heavier than the 40FP. In addition to being useable weight, Don's models seem to like more power anyway. I'm going with the 51 because I have one, but an LA46 would work just as well.
-
I thought the same about the short nose but after measuring against my standard sample (the SBD) I find the nose moment a little longer on the Spit. I had to do a bit of tweaking on the fuselage because the scale spinner would have been about 3+ inches in diameter. The first cut looked awful (to me) but now I think it is going to make a handsome airplane that should fly like a Novi!
I have no way to put a preview on here so ya'll will have to be patient. this will be a bit longer in doing as there is a lot of picky detail work to building the elliptical wing.
Keep those cards and letters coming, I hope I don't end up doing this for a mere handful of people.
-
I'm in for a set of plans. I like the looks and challenge of an elliptical wing, but no dihedral I hope.
-
Count me in on a set of plans, Don.
-
Thanks Don, I agree about the spinner. Full size is 25" dia. For a 40 + size model, we need to be around 1/8 full size. I haven't looked closely at that detail yet and mine will be full fuselage but I am certain that the shape of the nose is critical to capture the look and feel of a Spitfire—whatever the mark and power plant.
Alan, I think dihedral is necessary to get the vertical CG and visual effect right but you can get an OK visual effect by building the wing upside down with the top spar as close to straight as is practicable—remember it will curve with the eliptical plan form so the tips will require some packing.
If anybody wants drawings of amazing detail for the Mk IX or Mk XVI, check out the drawings available from Canadian Paul Monforton.
-
Don,
You know that I will have to have a copy.
Steve.

Don. I'm in for a set of plans. If they are the same price as the others and you haven't moved I can forward the funds to you immediately.

Just starting on good set of drawings. This will take a bit of time as there are lots of picky details I need to put on the drawings. I will get it done, just be patient, I think ya'll will like this model!
-
I'm in as well Don, sounds great! #^

Hey don. Been meaning to get back to this and almost forgot. Spitfire and the SBD for me when your ready. Rog

These Don Hutchinson Profile posts are the strangest I have ever seen. We get an announcement of a killer profile but we never ever see a picture LOL.

No soup for you! :'(

Don,
I would like a set of the T-34 plans, I think that is what it was, with the trike gear, Gerald Schamp, 132 NW Country Club Lane, Albany, OR 97321-1507.
-
Don't know if you all are aware of this but the vast bulk of Don's plans are being distributed (with Don's blessing) down in the Vendors Corner under the "Air Classics" moniker. Pic of my killer profile SBD has been posted more than once. Next on the list is the T-34C, long nose so no added weight and trike gear, what's not to like? 8)

The Spitfire drawing is complete (except for the stuff I overlooked), now I only need to write the book on how to build it! Should be ready next week! The drawing will go out as a PDF file so you can go and make as many copies as you need. This also saves the cost of repro and postage so I can send them out for only $10.00 a pop. A bargain in todays world!

Sorry, gotta disagree a little with that comment. n1
Historically Don has shown us examples here of his finished drawings in most cases. If you have been paying attention to this thread you would know that the Spitfire drawings hadn't even been completed, meaning there would be nothing constructive to show yet. I've got many of Don's plans and all are very impressive designs that I wish I could find the time to build. I'm as guilty as anyone but I do continue to be disappointed that more examples of Don's designs haven't been built and flown. Don would have a better idea than anyone the actual numbers of completed models built from his plans, but the overall number has to be very small. This would especially be in comparison to the number of designs he has produced and his time spent on the effort required. This is also why there are very few photos of any completed models. With all of that being the case I give Don major kudos in beginning and following through with any of his new design work. Starting from scratch, doing just a proper set of plans for a feasible and well thought out design is a LOT of work. Our benefit is that Don's plans are as good as it gets, and are second to none in his chosen semi-scale C/L segment. y1
Now, if there was a 56 to 60" span B-25 Mitchell for two .25's in the works... S?P

Thanks for the kind words Wayne. I have completed the Spitfire package, now need to get it into PDF format and will send out. I have a fair number of orders but a lot less than I expected for this fabulous airplane. Need to travel to Florida for a few days so that may slow down deliveries. As for photos of finished models, there aren't many in my files but here are a few of them.
-
Hi Don, Please put me down for a copy of your Spitfire plans.

I agree we don't see many completed ones because they are all scratch-built but, could someone post a picture of the plans to these planes. I don't doubt that they are very pretty but, could someone post a picture of these plans. What do the plans look like?
-
Hi Don,
I would certainly buy a PDF of the plan. Let me know where to mail the check.
Thanks
Mike
-
Don, could you put me down for a set of your P-47 plans.
-
Just got the plans for Don's T-34C, went right to work on it. Have fuse roughed out, tail feathers laid out as well. Its gonna be a good build for sure. LA .46 for power. Don's plans are easy to build from. Don would you be interested in doing the T-28, just a thought :).
-
Tried to post a copy of the Jug plan two times but apparently one cannot post PDF files here. All I need for anyone to get a plan is a valid e-mail address.
Don

Spitfire and Jug, please. You have my email and I believe I have your coordinates too.

I have sent out all the requests for drawings today except I need valid e-mail addresses for Dennis Lipsett and Gordon Van Tighem. Please send via PM or e-mail and your drawings will be on their way.
Thanks

I opened my email to find another work of art. Great job, Don. Check is in the mail.
Steve.
-
Don,
Are you still asking $20 or have you kept up with the rising cost of everything.
Dennis
-
Surprise! Since I do not have to make hard copies and ship in a big tube, I am only asking $10.00 for the pdf files. Then one can get repros from any good print shop and I avoid a lot of hassle with packing and shipping as well as repro and postage costs.
I will be away from home until Feb 24th so the vast horde of orders this message should elicit will be filled after that date!
Thanks in advance.

Don,
I sure wish you had plans for the F-86. That was a very cool plane. Could make a nice electric set-up.
-
Paul-
I do still have the plans. One aging blueline copy and also the original vellum. I can send the copy if you would like or I could have the vellum turned into a PDF file. I think not proper for general distribution as the model was published in Model Aviation in August of 2003.
-
Don,
Sent you an e-mail.
Thanks

For any of you needing prints and not knowing where to go, try Ratz over at Hip Pocket Aeronautics ( http://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_forum/index.php ). He does amazing work on excellent paper and for a very fair price.

but I do continue to be disappointed that more examples of Don's designs haven't been built and flown.
I'm trying to do my part...

PM sent, please include PayPal contact with response.
(If you have the F86 profile plan, I could use it too?)
Thanks again!
