The season is over. What's your net gain/loss for the season?
« on: October 08, 2012, 02:01:26 PM »
This year was very active for me. Active as in total number of airplanes finished and crashed.

I built one model from scratch
I finished one model(multi-year project)
I stuffed someone else's model.
I had one of my models stuffed by someone else.

Net/Net, I had zero airframe loss.  LL~

What's your net/net for the season?

I finished rebuilding a gift airplane (thanks Mark).
I stuffed my Skyray at the Tune Up, and have rebuilt it, somewhat unsatisfactorily.
I was given not one, but two airframes this year, one of them complete with adjustments which I ain't gonna touch for a while (thanks Steve and Randy).
I'm in the middle of building a Twister.

Counting the Skyray as a partial loss and the Twister a partial gain, I'm up three aircraft from last year.

But what's really interesting is the progression of my point standings: the first contest of the year I got 352 points.  This weekend I got 446.  That's a 94 points/year gain.  If this keeps up, in 2015 I'll be making more points than are possible under the current rules!  Now that's impressive!

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Scratch built original design profile Spyder (Electric).  Kit built Brodak Buster and Clown (both nitro for racing).  Assembled Brodak Pathfinder ARF and Super Clown (both electric).  Completed drawings for next years new design electric.  My RC buddies want to know where I've been!  Net/net +4

1 plane still under construction, an ARF just about done in my dorm room, plus a foam 3D RC plane.  So I got a net gain of +2 for this year.

I bought Norm Whittle's last IC plane, actually got my hands on it late last season, but had some health problems (tinnitus, sinus infection, etc) and didn't really get any good experience with it until mid-summer this year. Didn't go to the Jim Walker Memorial or Regionals, so flew in only 5 contests this year. One or two were with the old  profile F'Twister, because I wasn't comfortable with the new dog yet.  In the first 4, I placed 2nd twice and 1st twice, so I received some "encouragement" to move up, and I decided to make the move for the 5th, which was yesterday. My first flight sucked, but my 2nd round was about what I can usually do.  I was ok with it, for which the Judges awarded me 489.5 IIRC. Not the highest score I've ever gotten, but it got me 8th in Expert, which was ok, though I had hopes of getting a 135 point landing on my 2nd round and nipping Paul, Howard, and Chris, at least.  None of the other 7 entries stepped on their privates and gave me anything at all to gloat over.  LL~ LL~ LL~

While driving home from Salem, I had some thoughts about ground equipment (remote glow power and "shore power" of some sort) for next year. New, lighter version of the same plane, but with a PA .51/pipe power instead of the .46VF (more power, ohh ooh ooh!). I'd like a Classic and maybe even a new Profile, or more likely, a Classic Profile. It's time to get the balsa out.  y1 Steve

Hey, you can't take the credit for that!  %^@
That's chalked down on my book!
If you let the handle go I would have completed that 9 perfectly, instead you attempted to change my mind half-way through the maneuver, but you quickly realized how stubborn I am. In an ironic "Twister of fate" (or is the expression ill-fated Twister ... I can't remember, but anyway) it was your plane that you gave to someone else that was then given to me. Heck, what goes around really does come around. Now I understand control line  <=

My net for the season: Learning that maneuvers start at 5' and not 15'. "Someone" at our club pointed me to the Barry/Fitton article in the March/April edition of SN **. Of course first time out I executed the maneuver 15' style. I learned how not to do that and did so at the cheap price of stuffing someone else's plane.   LL~  LL~  LL~

(** Seriously, that SN article gave the best beginner/intermediate flying advice I have ever read and I've spent a lot of time reading the forums. Thank you guys for taking the time!   H^^  )

Well, I gave away one stunt ship, built one, and was given two others. So I am net +2.

On the combat front I am well into the red. I must be down 10 ships though I have resurrected some of them.

Started three new airplanes...all framed up ready to cover.  That makes 6 airframes ready to cover.  Finished one airplane, a Gieseke Nobler for VSC.  Gave away two airplanes and sold one.  Crashed nothing lost nothing.  Still flying my 15 year old Geo XL with Belko long shaft.  Looks really sad but still flys great.  Flew two OP electrics...John Callentines new bird...Incredible is only description.  Hurrying now to finish mine.
Flew Bob Whitely's VSC winner...if you couldn't win with that thing it's not because of the airplane...solid gold and a real classic...Double Star lite 60.
A real Growler.  Only problem is it's not mine!!!

Keep on keep'n on!!!

My gain is getting to a couple of contests that I have missed in the last few years.   Gave away a couple of planes trying to  make room  for new ones as well as the ones I am working on.   I myself have something in the building/finishing stage or being put back in flying form.   Have one fun fly left for this year that I know of.  By the way I think I have at least 4 planes that have not been in the air yet.  Need to go get starting fluid for the ether that is in the can.

Two crashes (see FlyingLines "Numerous Fragments").  First one (electric) was rebuilt in about a week.  Second (P-51) produced a few undamaged parts to construct a new one from plans.

The Oriental is ready to fly and has five flights on it so far.
My Barnstormer, waiting in the wings for so long, will get finished.
Might attempt an ARCA, Italian design for Classic.
Then on to my approved SV-41 Triumph, which is Randy's foam wing Vectra to resemble the Trianic with a PA 65 pipe for power.

Season is not over for me.  Made it to 4 contest so far, still have 2 more to go.  No crashes yet, but did not finish the P-51 I started in the Spring because of all the contest activity.  Had planned to finish it by now to fly in the Warbird event at Clanton and/or Baton Rouge, but it aint gonna happen.
Hope to finish it over the Winter build season along with 2 new PA birds, one electric and one glow.

Still haven't managed to get the wife out there though, still working on that one. :)

My record for this year is as follows:

Fifteen or twenty planes in the shop ready to fly.......fifty kits on the shelf waiting to be built............but, built none this year............on the bright side, crashed none this year...........flew none this year............didn't flip a prop this year.............I guess that leaves me in a neutral position for this year, but just wait till next season......
