brodak decals
« on: October 06, 2016, 11:23:49 AM »
I am slowwwwwwllllyyyy getting my Hurricane ready to paint.
last night I was watching some glue dry on a repair to the Oriental and I started looking at the decal sheets for the Hurricane. I have always assumed they were water-slide decals but they seem to be self-adhesive stick-ons.

The question is--- will they lay down and will I have any success putting clear dope over them?

Keep them warm and they will conform. You can clear over a scrap piece to be sure.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Ken,

Could you Post a photo of the decal sheet?

Well, yes. But a test won't tell me what will happen after eight months. Until it's been 8 months.........

Well, I did the unthinkable.
I read the instructions.
Who woulda thought THAT was a good idea?

With care and minimal effort it says I can and should put clear dope over them.

These decals actually work very well with some proper technique.  y1

 Here's what I do...

First, trim each decal very carefully right up to the edge of the color. Any clear areas you leave can be prone to a fingerprint showing through from the adhesive side once installed.
Put them on "wet" using a spray bottle loaded with water and 2-3 drops of dish soap. Spray the area liberally where the decal is to be located on the model as well as the back (adhesive) side of the decal once you've peeled it from the backing. Be generous with the spray bottle during this phase. Position and place the decal where desired and then, from the center, squeegee any bubbles and water out to the edges. I just use a small rubber squeegee (about 4" long leftover from an old auto window tint kit) and it works great.
Let them dry for a day or two and then start with spraying a few light "dry" coats of dope over just the decals to get them sealed. After you've got them sealed well continue with the rest of your normal finishing process.
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!
