Spectating at the nats.
« on: July 06, 2023, 04:00:10 PM »
I have a few days off next week and I am thinking of going to the nats. I don’t have enough time to compete but I could be there Wednesday and Thursday. I would head home on Friday. It’s a ten hour drive from my home. Not really a problem, I like road trips. My question is: is it a good idea to go if I’m not going to enter. I would like to be able to pick the brains for some of those who are competing. Is that even possible? Any opinions?

Good idea.. Just don't ask questions of competitors while they are in competition.  They get extremely focused and can be abrupt if bothered, been there, done that. Wait until they are away from the circles and sitting,, They are taking ten and usually don't mind talking about their models, etc..  Let them know who you are and ask to ask.. H^^

I will be there competing. I dont mind chatting to spectators . If I am ready to fly or I have to help someone else I just let them know. I think that is pretty much the case for everyone there. Come if you want. You will see some great flying and you will enjoy yourself.

Its definitely worth the trip.  Stand on the side of the circle that the judges are on and watch carefully.  There will be four circles flying.  Check the scoreboard to see when the "names" fly and watch their maneuvers carefully.  Watch the flyers body orientation and placement relative to the maneuver.  Note where the maneuver is placed relative to the wind.  Pay attention to what makes a set of maneuvers not look so good.  Take a stop watch and record their lap times.  In my opinion its definitely worth the trip.  Have fun, its a great hobby/sport.

Please come. If you’re talking to me when it’s time to fly, remind me to put a battery in my airplane.

One thing to add- get out there pretty early, 8am -ish, because a lot of people will do their first qualifying flight, and pass the second, to come out later in the evening. That is also interesting and perhaps a better time to hit people up t the field. On Thursday, it's Top 20 day, and it will be over pretty early (noon).

But by all means, come out, meet people. They will tell you if they are too busy, don't take is personally, and they will usually apologize and tell you to come back after the flight.

Moan Groan Dispair .

AFTER THESE , look what happened . The B*rsterds were EVERYWHERE . Now , iF SOMEONE'D PULLL THERE FINGER OUT , there could be millions of annoying little control line fliers EVERYWHERE .

Whether any of em id be any goods another thing . And , never mind , one or two break a leg or get eaten by a killer whale . So whats the odd finger or two .

( For the disconbobulated - these movies multiped the participants manifold in these ' SPORTS ' by presenting them in a humourous understandable and appealing manner . NOT Hysterically as is the current wont .)

Of course , there'd be More Competition , that way .   VD~     S?P

So If Sparky's out with the Wideo , give him all possable assitance . a Assistant or two too , woulda be a good Eh . Tickly a charming photogenic well spoken blonde of the female persuasion . FOR STARTERS .

Or giive Bruce Brown a Call . :!

Donald: My son and I will be there judging, feel free to chat us up
in the evenings when everybody is practicing. The L-pad is a gathering
place for everyone involved.

I have competed or judged at every Nats that has been held at Muncie
(1996) and you can learn more in this week than the rest of the year.

If you haven’t already, save some time to check out the museum.
