Post by: John Stiles on January 05, 2011, 07:16:39 AM
Okay, who besides myself has ever slept in a silk parachute,  when, why, and what was it like for you? H^^

This may be a little off topic, and the Mods might close it...no problems. Just very interested in finding out how many besides myself discovered the virtues of silk. Thanks

It's relevant if you ever covered a plane with parachute silk... <=

My first duty station I got hold of a parachute and used it exclusively on every model I built. It sealed with dope fast, had ripstop stitching so you never had to worry about puncture or fraying, shrank beautifully, and it had white and orange pieces in it. It was really a great deal for me, after all I only got $38.50 every 2 weeks at the time. Of course it isn't too relevent as parachutes were nylon not silk.

I've sorta been planning a trip to the local surplus store to see if they have a cargo chute.....I figure there'll be enough to put up in the ceiling of my hobby room, and still have a bunch left over. The one I slept in, on Widbey Island during survival training, was so big, it folded into a mattress with plenty left for top covers. It was cold out there in the N.Pacific...and Dennis is correct....makes real good wing covering. y1

Covered my first "full blown stunter" in 1963 with rip stop parachute nylon. ;D

Nope, I don't. It was a thick card press-out Spitfire, put together with tabs and slots, the yuletide I was two and a half, (Dec. '41). (I always thought it was 1-1/2, but that must be incorrect?). I was given it and Dad said he's put it together for me after lunch. After lunch I had done it by myself. Is this what started me on a lifetime hobby which interfered with life more than it should have?  :(

Oops! How did this get here? It's supposed to be in "Still got your first model?" thread. Moderators - He..e...lp.

Headed to the "Rock" today for my chemo shot...If I feel okay, I'm gonna swing by the surplus store and check for a chute....it's hard to catch them when they have one....I'm hoping for OD Green.
