Whittier Narrows Toys for Tots
« on: November 29, 2018, 12:15:21 PM »
Weather Permitting, the annual Toys for Tots flying will be this coming weekend at Whittier Narrows.  y1

There will be speed and racing. Dave Hull should have details regarding racing and Howard Doering for speed.

KOTRC is sponsoring three events. Saturday and Sunday will be open for speed trials for Hollow Log and two classes of Torquette (plain bearing and unlimited). Sunday will be the 1cc "Leprechuan" Stunt contest. Contact me for details on the KOTRC events. larry_renger@earthlink.net  H^^

Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Weather for Saturday:

Cool (51F at 8:00 a.m. and warming to 64F), calm winds, humidity dropping from ~80% to 50% before going up again in the late afternoon. Chance of rain increasing in the afternoon to ~20%. Tune your engines appropriately!

Weather for Sunday:

Sunny but cool (50F at 8:00 a.m. warming to 60F), calm winds, humidity starting ~56% and dropping throughout the day. "Zero" chance of rain.

Looks good for flying!

Weather today was perfect. Much speed and combat activity. Tomorrow, more of the same plus racing and 1cc Aerobatics.

More entries are showing up for Hollow Log proto! Not just a John and Larry show this year. In fact Dave Hull is in the lead so far.

Come and hear the Dyna Jets sound off! Bring earplugs! If you haven’seen speed flown, it is worth watching. Of course so is indoor microfilm flying (once, anyway).  ;D

Y’all come! $10 toy to enter as many events as you care to fly. Free to spectate after the $6 park entry fee.

PS: I wiped out both my Zippiee Hollow Log and Kirn Torquette. Poor landing gear design on the Zippiee allowed a prop strike to flip it into the circle straight overhead to a crash. The Torquette just plain got ahead of my piloting skill and went in at very high speed. Both engines are OK. Hopefully, tomorrow in 1cc Stunt will be a better day.  HB~>

Well, it was set up to fly clockwise, and it turns out that needs some lower speed practice. Also, too much control throw.  ~^

That was some contest! Felt like a 4-Ring circus, especially on Sunday. I was trying to be in 4 places at once. Crazier than the NATS!

Impressions:

--Hollow Loggin' is a fun event. I'll have to build one sometime this year and get the bugs out before the contest
--Proxy flying is a challenge. Fun when it's working, and sometimes frustrating when you can't figure things out. More fun if you know the guy that mailed it in, because you can razz him about the prop being on backwards
--Getting a PhD in plumbing helps if you have to debug a strange fuel tank. If you have one, please send me your business card and let me know your rates and working hours
--Log motors are rebuildable at the field, plus keep a few spares handy. Probably should have popped another engine on the Duly machine and got the job done!
--Don't fly Goodyear if you can't whip the thing out of the pits. I lost a perfectly good recycled Buster from a torque roll and wingover event. But all them little balsa chips were a pretty red color....
--Them juniors are a force to be reckoned with. You think you can beat 'em? Come out and try!
--Find out why your stunt motor quit after 5 laps before you try the reverse wingover on the next flight. Or else bring spare needle valves!

Thanks to all the guys that put this contest on. Thanks for ordering up PERFECT weather. Special thanks to the CD, Mr. Howard Doering. Thanks to the guys that came out and brought a PILE of toys for the kids!

And for the guys that thought about coming--you missed a good show.
