Title: spakling compound

  In the finish and paint section I posted a request about using a spakling compound to fill some minor cracks in balsa wood, I must not have made my request  clear, but I am looking for something that I can apply dope or another type of finishing compound over.

       Thanks for your suggestions...

Gil if it requires a little strength I'd use Super Fil available through Wicks.  It's epoxy based.  For filling small holes, cracks and dents where strength isn't required I use a lot of this from Home Depot:

What Dave said, although I don't like making Super Fil fillets.  Dope will go over either.  I saw something you said about foam.  Either of these is compatible with foam, but probably won't provide enough of a barrier over raw polystyrene foam to prevent the dope from dissolving the foam.

I've used the lightest spackeling compound I could find for many years to patch dings and hanger rash when ever encountered without any problems! To face it off I've used light sandpaper attached to paint stirring sticks with double sided scotch tape. When the paper gets too full to be cleared with a rubber belt sanding cleaner( its like a large eraser) you simply pull off the sandpaper and start all over again! I've found this to be a very handy tool in my shop!

Great QUESTION. What about the Filler that goes on PINK and turns WHITE when dry......"Idd's need to Know"

DAP Dry-dex. Goes on pink turns white when dry. Easy to sand and lightweight. Use Super-Fil for fillets. Apply Super-fil, then I wet a finger with water to smooth out.

   OK for flat spot repairs, but spakling compound will NOT take paint as a fillet material. I tried it every which way and they always blistered. Super Fil or finish cure epoxy& micro balloons are best for fillets.

Now the stuff has a primer added to it. Not sure if that would interfere.

Gil I responded to this question on the other web site

To make ensure the dope or other foam attacking finish does NOT bleed through the dry wall spackling compound, you can add white glue to the thinned mixture.

I do this all the time on the foam combat wings and later fuel proof the nose wood parts with thinned Sig dope and don't have any bleed under into the foam

I also use the Dry-dex on the fillets, but only as touch up to the Super-fil. I also spray, or rather mist on the fillets when painting. Seems to help.
