Title: Sources of Carbon Fibre Matte?
Post by: Joe Ed Pederson on December 09, 2018, 02:44:11 PM
In the May/June 1998 article in Stunt News on the Doctor and Medic, Ted Fancher recommended covering the tail and fuselage with .02 oz per Sq yd Carbon Fibre Matte.  First, I was wondering if the .02 oz per sq yd is a typo.  Brodak sells "carbon veil cloth" that they say is 2 oz for about 1/3 of a square yard.  And I found 3/10 oz per sq yd carbon fibre matte in the RSM catalog.

Second, can anyone recommend a source of .02 oz per sq yd carbon fibre matte if there is carbon fibre matte that light?

I think the 0 is in the wrong place, should be .2.  I last got some from ACP: https://store.acpsales.com/products/2380/carbon-fiber-tissue

Thanks George and Steve,

I thought .02 oz per sq yd sounded unimaginably light.
Thanks for the sources.

I think this is what you want.
This product and supplier is used by many stunt flyers

ACP Composites of Livermore Ca.
https://www.acpcomposites.com/company
Operated by the Sparr family who have a CL stunt history

Search for 0.2 oz. carbon tissue

Jim,

Thanks.  I went to the ACP Composites site and they were out of stock, so I ordered from the place Steve suggested.  Man are the shipping charges high!  The shipping cost as much as the carbon fiber matte/tissue.

Brodak Manufacturing has 0.2 oz carbon mat.

You might want to compare prices from other sources.

Fiberglast guys are great.  local to me which means I can just go up there if I need to!  But, they are also really cool to deal with, and happy to answer any questions.  While I was building my NAR level 2 rocket, they were a bountiful source of info on which products to use and why.

Why do people use this stuff? They say it adds no strength so, it must be something that eliminates a step in the finishing? Maybe just CF mojo?

I experimented, did a few tests with cloth from these people:

I used carbon fiber when it first came out applying it with dope.   Learned real fast, don't back stroke with the brush.  I've even used fiber glass which for me works better until time to fill the weave.   Silk span works best if using dope. besides if you sand carbon fiber and it will get on your skin, it will not brush off like fiber glass or silk span.   D>K
