Title: Sound Module for Electric
Post by: Ken Culbertson on February 04, 2025, 10:31:28 AM
Has anybody tried something like this for electric?

Ok, done laughing?  It has a serious application.  The sound varies with the throttle setting.  It appears to attach to the BEC in-between the timer and ESC.  I have a heavy dose of tinnitus and I cannot hear the boost and brake from the motor.  I have to rely totally on feel to tell me if it is right.  Sound would help me.  Adding 3.5grams to my overweight planes wouldn't even be noticed.

That would be very cool! You could make your e-powered stunter sound like a Pratt & Whitney R-2800! Even with hearing issues you should be able to hear THAT! RC Scale guys use these devices for more realism, so no reason we can't use it for our own purposes. My own hearing at age 77 isn't great and I don't clearly hear the rpm shifts on my Spin 66/Igor timer setup.

3.5 grams weight is without speaker.
If use insulated lines to send signal from the gadget to the pilot who wears the backpack with batteries, amplifier and surround sound- then it will be very dramatic show!

Actually the 3.5g is with the speaker.  It is for RC so it cannot have external power.  It uses either the onboard battery or an auxiliary 2s.

But you have a twin, so double that?  :-)

Sterio!  Seriously if I can hear the motor changing for 3.5grams I am dumb enough to try one of these.  n~
It would not go on the Twin - No room.

I can't think of the guy's name right off hand, (maybe Grant Histead?) has a couple of scale models that use one of these I think and has flown them at the Broken Arrow Stunt and Scale contest. I think one was in a large Spacewalker and the other in a twin of some kind.
   Type at you later,

I used one of these in my scale shoestring. I used the side of the fuse as the speaker

A waste of time.........using it to make engine sounds. I would program in the Ride of the Valkyries..... And turn it UP!

I would only want it to hear the RPM changes to trim the timer.  My tinnitus prevents me from hearing the boost and brake. An IC I can hear fine.  Hey, for $10 and 3.5 grams why not try it?  Personally, I would use the music from "Last of the Mohegans".  Wagner can't hold a candle to Trever Jones.  LL~

I didn't realize how much the sound of an engine distracted me until I switched to electric.  I find the relative silence to be very calming when I fly, so I have no desire to add noise to my model.

I am with you 100%+ on how much the engine noise distracted me, knowing that the power would be there instead of hoping and focusing on every burp, praying it wouldn't go lean and stay there.  Being able to put 100% of the focus on flying instead of the engine is a real blessing I had not anticipated when I switched. Even though I still love the sound of a well-tuned IC, especially some of the pipes our local guys use, there is no way will I go backwards.

I would only use this gizmo for trimming.  I would probably just tape to a temporary mount on the outside.  An esc or timer with telemetry would probably be a better choice except all the ones that I know of are difficult to download the data and analyze it at the field.  Maybe I just don't know what is out there. ???

Tell me, when you mention what you posted to an avid IC flier do you get that "you gotta be kidding me..." look?   LL~

Come on --- It's primarily for scale not stunt!   S?P  D>K
