I got started early on my 2019 model by building the wing in July. Painting was in progress by mid October when we traveled down to California for Golden State. All went well with final clear coats being about finished in early December. Sanding and bufing of the fuselage and tail went well. I held the wings for last as thre were some issues causing me some concern. When I finally got to the wing, problems did inded crop up. I had to do numerous touch-ups and each one compounded the issues i was having.
The main issue stemmed from the fact that the wings and flaps are painted in a thre color fade from orange at the root to yellow midwing to white at the tip area. It is almost impossible to repair this type paint scheme. After numeous talks with my flying partnr Chris Cox, I started thinking the only thing I could was strip the wings and flaps and start over. Hence, i am begining to question my sanity.
Pictures to follow.

Here is how it looked at completion.

Oh, I don't think there is any question here.

Recovered with polyspan and carbon veil. 4 coats of clear already with a couple more to go before filler.

Thanks Brett. Knew I could count on you.

Whoah, I thought it looked perfect the first time around.

Hi Alan,
No one is more critical of our own handy work that the craftsman himself. If you were not going to be satisfied, then you did the right thing. Glad this one is coming out lighter than Bearcat #1. Looking forward to seeing it at GSSC.
BTW, you build a lighting speed compared to most of us. Took me a week to align and install pre made Carbon wheel pants this week.
-
Jim, are you sure they are pointing in the proper direction. Might want to double check.
-
Alan, could be Chris is messing with you. I would have sought advice from a straight shooter like me or Larry Fernandez.

I questioned your sanity the morning I met you.

Thanks Brett. Knew I could count on you.
Every time I drive to the NATs, around about Grand Island Nebraska, I ask myself *what in the HELL am I doing?!".

Geez Larry, i'm really sorry. I guess I had forgotten what a quiet, shy and sensitive guy you are. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. How can I ever make this up to you? I am really dreading the thought that i might be inching my way ever closer to making your "top 10" list of modellings greatest a$$holes.
-
Bob,
As I've known you for years, it never dawned on me that you were anything but crazy. What kind of lame excuse did Robbie givde you or how much money did he offer to entice you to do this. A voluntary drive across the mountains and then the midwest in late February is worse than crazy. You need to get back to building and flying models.

Across the country in a Nissan Cube, you think your back hurt a few years ago.....you better bring the good stuff for that trip. :D :D
Alan, I had a wing repair once that caused me to have to lift off the whole panel like you did. When I put the new polyspan on I used a thinned epoxy at the edges so the thinner in the dope wouldn't touch the automotive paint and attack it on the bottom of the wing all the way around. Everything went well until the next day and epoxy hadn't cured. It was super cold that winter. So I waited another day, and another day, and another day etc....now the anger is starting to build we are over a week now since application. This plane is fairly new as well. The fear of having to take off the bottom of the wing to is building. A few more days and its still tacky....what to do, what to do. Damn it, I don't know what to do. Sanity, what is that? I moved the plane in the shop and by accident I left it by the shop window. Came back the next day and the area that was exposed to the sun through the old single pane drafty window was totally cured and the other area was not! BOOM problem solved. Out in the driveway she goes and a few hours later it's all cured up. Doped the rest very carefully and finished it up. It was a badass plane and flew really good for a month or so then a bird hit it and the rest if history. DAMN BIRD! Still burns me up today!!
Yes we have to question our sanity. But then again that's what makes it fun.
I am sure your wing repair will go a lot better than mine did and will be a lot less painful than Bob's trip across the country in a Nissan Cube. :)

So I am not the only one then! 3 days by oneself on the road all day long gets to you.

Alan:
Do you really think there is any question about the sanity of any of us?
Try this on for size: I'm getting ready to fly out to Seattle today so that I can exit the airport tonight and get in my son's Nissan Cube and drive straight through - right through the teeth of storm Quiana - to Stockertown, PA. Now, do you feel a little less insane because of your Rare Bear set back? I didn't think so... n~
Later - Bob Hunt
I'll wave at you as you pass by, tonight I hope!
-
And just why do you think Nissan Cube's are referred to as "Clown Car's"? ;D Good luck you guys!
Alan, I'll take any of your hand-offs any time. I'll even learn to fly the other way!
-
Call me regarding lodging en route.
-
To be perfectly honest, the fuselage wasn’t exactly a piece of cake either, was it Alan. 😈
-
You just had to remind me.
By the way, I was over at you house Tuesday making paint masks. Not to worry, only used about 12 yards of vinyl.
-
Never question your sanity, it leads to insanity. Never try to teach a pig to sing. It is an exercise in futility, and only annoys the pig.
-
Coming across on I-90 Bob?

Go ahead, make more. It's cheap! Right Chris?

Bob & Robbie, free coffee and donuts at the Hinton's just off the Ohio turnpike!

The next roll of vinyl will be cheap for me. Alan will be paying for the entire roll.

I am going to check my records. Pretty sure I bought that one.😈😈😈😈

Did R&R make it home yet?

Did R&R make it home yet?
If they'd planned on coming across on I-90 I sure hope they're well past here. We're in the middle of a wicked blizzard here in south central MN right now, LOTS of snow and very high winds, freeways are closed for miles in every direction.

I’m not crazy, and neither am I! LL~

Good news Bob!
-
Bob,
Glad your trip went well. I am zooming right along with the wings. Sanded out the filler on the top panels today and will get the bottom done tomorrow. They look much better with very few minor flaws. Should get the base coat of lighy grey on late tomorrow so I can find any other flaws and fix them. Might get the base white on on Thursday. Thought I might win the race with Chris and Paul this year but this has set me back about 3 weeks.
-
Glad you made it in one piece.
I thought I felt a shock wave Friday morning when you passed by!
-
You two are gusty making a cross country this time of year in the norther part of the good ole USA. Reminded me of when the wife granddaughter and I were on the way to VSC years ago. Got to Liberal KS and pulled in for the night. Had the Suburban in 4 wheel drive on icy road for over 30+ miles. D>K
Any way glad you made it and aren't we all a little insane in this hobby. n~
Have I stated how much I detest this so called key board? HB~>
