It's nice if you need to get down in a hurry or stop in a hurry.  I wouldn't want to be on that plane if one of those rockets on the thing malfunctioned

That is exactly what you were watching.  The forward firing rockets fired before the airplane touched down n1  This plane started life as a 1974 C-130H model.
