The "Joust" had other events including combat, and carrier besides stunt.

Looks like there must have been some tricky air.   Both pilots having trouble with verticals and intersections.  I know I've seen Lou fly better than this video. D>K

There is a "row" of tall trees to the right and also behind the cameraman. The air up high can get tricky. And gusts can be unexpected. But the weather (at least on Saturday) was better than average....

The carrier event was run Saturday, with Ron Duly as ED. Pete Cunha brought a Gardy Grummion and won the percent of record. Here he is assisted by Dave Dawson on the deck, with Ron closing in with his stopwatch. Each flight had two timers. Pete's plane flew really smoothly, and the engine run was very good. The only stress on his first flight was getting him standing in the right spot to center him up on the deck for landing. The second picture shows how easy it is to smile after you put up a winning flight!

Whittier Narrows is notorious for both evil air and difficult backgrounds. The morning has you flying against pitch-black backlit trees about 45 degrees high, in the afternoon, the air blows through a valley, over the 60 freeway (which is usually packed) and into the same trees which are about 20 feet off the edge of the circle. You are flying around a 45 degree angle to the treeline. The already turbulent air also flows along the treeline, so you get wildly varying wind direction from one side of a maneuver to another, air off the freeway on the left sides, and a tailwind on the right sides. And this is the *good* circle, the one right next to the freeway is even worse.

Fly here enough, and the worst day at Muncie seems like cheating.

That sounds like what used to be our circle at the Topeka Park and zoo site.   D>K

You forgot to mention the occasional RC model flying over the circle. I know Lou had one fly over during an official flight.

This weekend there were two poles with streamers at different locations to aid in assessing wind direction and magnitude. It was fun to see them in disagreement with each other.

Right - East Northeast at the upwind side, dead north on the downwind side!  Builds character.

I was there once when they were having pylon races, one crashed in the grass circle, luckily no ones was flying combat that day.
My purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

Air Miseries,

It's a pretty nice facility in my opinion. If we had endless water and unlimited maintenance, it could be nicer. Those that do--enjoy what you've got!

Speed circle with chain link fence. Several grass combat circles, recently given lots of TLC by the combat locals. One grass circle with a concrete carrier deck and center pad. Two general purpose paved circles, with one marked out for racing. Some trees for shade. Some picnic benches because it's a park. A tether car track, just redone and in excellent condition.
