Coming back to the fold
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:47:43 PM »
I am entering my first contest since 2007. VSC! It is my third appearance there since 1999. Something borrowed, something blue! This year it is Jims Nobler. Just glad to participate and see all of you. So this will be twice with something borrowed and blue. First with my fathers Hawker Hunter and my last time with a beater Magician in 2006. That was fun! :D Little bird has some ability with legal mods and a 40 for power.

A profile is on the bench half finished and I'm breaking in a new LA46.... A Blue Sky Models profile Roadrunner. Also a kit, offered  up for a nominal fee of free  ;D Just build it he said.( Thanks Jim) It will finish a bit porky! :o. Larry style fuse sanded and ready for finish weighs 10 oz.naked.  LL~It will most likely trim out fine with monocote surfaces and a painted fuse. Wing mounted gear and spats rather than pants.... Classic legal.

I recently received my molds for the Chevelle top block, turtle deck and fuse bottom. They were built 12 years ago and were stored by Rob Young for me. Looking for a PA 61or two here, bearing in tact no leaks....grove filed. Also interested in a #6 or #7 sprinkler venturis....(Dave or Frank). or anyone who may have these items. Low time or carefully maintained interests me. Sold my stuff to Allen a few years before he passed. Man I miss him! He was my confidante and a mentor. One was sold to a nice guy in Michigan and John Paris, another nice guy from Michigan, bought my Stalkers. He used them in Korea he said when he wrote to me few years ago...the one he was using fired right up he stated.

Anyway just banter...maybe some pics as I progress.

H^^

'Bout time, fella!  Glad to see it, have fun!  (No, you can't have my PA's, even though I'm taking a year off.)  By necessity that is; I'll pm you if you want.

Hey Tom, I too know the feeling about VSC.  And John, are you the same one that saved this old man from being drowned at the NATS quite a few years ago after Intermediate was flown?

Great to hear you are coming back.  I see another Chevelle in my future.  I have a NIB Stalker61RE if you are interested.

PS:  If you want more grunt, I also have Stalker76re.   Broken in and only 4 or 5 flights in the Chevelle.

Say John when you gitaroundtuit how about making plans available for the 46 sized Chevelle? I heard a rumor that one had been designed...if not, it should be. Get John Miller to do the plans and I'll volunteer to make the prototype. If you get impatient waiting for a PA-61 consider a Ro-Jett. Awesome engines as well.  Welcome Back! ;D

Hiya John, Dang it's good to hear you're coming back!!! Not that I've been all that active but I didn't fully lay off either. Hope you can make it up to to the Mich CL Champs in August, I'll be having my Weenie Roast as usual, but this year I will be joined by my then (date 11 July) new wife Robin who is very supportive and likes the activity. My avaitar is her with my Gladiator. I don't think you've made a Weenie Roast but Saturday night after flying, all the flyers and their people are invited over for a party. I have a circle in the back yard with a concrete center pad and very friendly neighbors. Yall come!!!!!!

Thanks Paul! Hope to see you too. If you remember, I showed up briefly while you were practicing when you made your last VSC appearance. I was en route to PHX from ELP. Had to stop in and see who was playing stunt! ;) So, where DO I find a McCoy 40....I like politically correct Classic....but would run a Aero ...if I had one. y1

John,
Glad to see you back at it. I wish I could get to VSC. Finances no longer make it possible. Have fun!

Finances and family health issues took me out of the game for years too...obviously. I would never quit the hobby willingly save for health and family and finances...and all arrived at once or in succession. Hope to see you again out here! Love the work you did with your kit effort. I know it is a tough journey. Approached several times on the subject but I truly love the D' Ottavio stuff....that man was impressive when he was 80 something...cant imagine him at 35!

Despite the weight issues, this profile Roadrunner kit has some merit....You did well and I cant wait to get her finished and trimmed out. If I like it, I will certainly do up the full version from scratch...I saw one fly very impressively in some wind here at VSC some years back...

Yep interested in one or both but...tell me what happened with your Chevelle? Was she heavy, underpowered????

You did me a great honor building our design and painting to the original scheme. I was embarrassingly flattered! It is a dated design now, but at the time it was designed, it fit a specific working standard and my standards for aerodynamics have changed. Yes, there will be several more and there were several since the original with modifications. PM me if interested in an updated version that was much much better. Last redo was in 2003 and I am sure it is still current for any powerplant you may choose. You fly in the soup of the bayou which is where the Stalker 61 RE does not perform well without minor mods and nitro. The original must be kept below 65 oz with the stalker for power and the fast wing will wind up like a top in the wind if you aren't prepared to lower pitch for the conditions.

Nice to see you Allan! H^^

Yes, there are plans for a 46 size. They are in storage back east but as time permits I will certainly get you a set with some suggestions. John Miller surely can draw some up and knows Stalkers if that is your preferred pp but I will make copies and suggest. I assume you mean for an LA 46? Most have not been pleased with the Stalker 46 power and a modded Tigre 46 is the real stump puller of the three. Grady hated the Stalker 46 for power after I suggested he try one. The 51 is the sweetheart for 46 size birds and larger when talking Stalkers.

That does not look likely Allen. I flew home to see Dad over the holidays and frankly I truly dislike airline travel anymore. I wish I could come for some extended visitation but with only two weeks per year? If I could retire and do winters here and summer there....you would see me often. Miss you guys.
