Solingen Mini Razor Plane
« on: September 17, 2013, 02:09:57 PM »
Not even sure that I'm spelling it correctly.  Are these still being sold by Hobby Lobby?  Tried searching their web site yesterday and came up empty handed.  One problem is that any search containing the word "plane" comes back with unlimited number of things to look at, none are what I'm looking for.  Does anyone else offer these?  If they're not being manufactured anymore, what would be the next best choice for a razor plane?

Thanks

I have the one you are talking about but cant find it on Hobby Lobby. I did find this and it looks interesting https://www.a2zcorp.us/store/ProductDetailNP.asp?Cguid={AAEAAAC5-29E2-4F60-98EA-A5B5E53E2CB3}&ProductID=4596&Category=ModelTools:KnivesBladesStripper

I also found some Wilco's on eBay. They may be the best ones I ever used

When I went looking for a mini razor plane a few years back - for HLG wings - I ended up at Tim Goldstein's A2Z model supply.  It is a David, not a Solingen, but it is available, and Tim carries the blades for it.  You can find it toward the bottom of the page:

I have been really happy with this razor plane and the blades.  I occasionally re-hone the blade's edges on my leather strop I got for my carving knives.

Your mileage may vary...

I have had great success using a Master Airscrew razor plane.

There are at least two razor planes on Ebay at this time. One is the once very popular "little Giant" and my favorite, a "Select". These will work with the Candidius double edge blades being sold by A2Z. The "David" plane is OK, also sold by A2Z, is OK until the plastic blade holder warps or breaks.

BTW - the Ebay prices on razor planes has been OK, my son bought one recently for $10.
