Title: Socket Head Cap Screws
Post by: Dennis Leonhardi on January 02, 2012, 11:49:27 PM
I've purchased socket head cap screws (black oxide finish) in quantity from Micro Fasteners at pretty reasonable prices.  Unfortunately, they offer only a limited number of sizes.

OK, now that I've shared EVERYTHING I know about these animals ... what's the scoop?

I'm using these primarily as engine screws.  What's the best material/finish for our use?

Does anyone offer a wide range of sizes in quantities of 50 - 100 pieces?  (I'm especially looking for metric.)

Even common engines, such as the O.S. line, seem to use a dizzying variety of screws; trying to find replacement screw sets at ANY price for the Out Of Production varieties can be a real time-consuming project.

Suggestions/Answers?  Thanks!

Try McMaster-Carr and Small Parts.  They may not have what you want -- but it's two more places to look.

This may be of interest to those wanting screws which are a real odd size.  The old OS .15 have head screws which measure up to M2.7 x 0.6.  No doubt OS made a run of specials for some reason rather than use the standard of the day M3 x 0.6 which was used by them on the larger engines.

If you source M3 x 0.6 socket head screws, with care a split button die can be squeezed in that bit to give useable M2.7 x 0.6 screws for that engine reno.  The head diameter is best skimmed just that bit as well to give the right proportions there.
