So......Who Else Flew Today?
« on: November 14, 2015, 04:19:59 PM »
One of our club members talked to the Mayor of Fridley (my new favorite Minnesota town) and we flew at softball fields. The Mayor said "no rules against it and softball season is wrapped.
Sure felt good to cut it up.
So who else flew this Saturday?

I raked leaves at the club field.  It wasn't nearly as fun as flying, but given that it didn't rain, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been!

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Got two flights on one of my Cardinals late morning before the wind came up. mid 60's, nice up until a couple hours ago, windy now-supposed to rain the next two days, but I got a couple in anyway.

Shug;

Wish I could have flown, BUT, got a new left hip 2 Tuesdays ago at Walter Reed and I think it would have been a bit
hard to turn around in the circle using a walker or a cane.   LL~ LL~ LL~

at least there is no more hip pain, just the pain around the insision area is all. ( at times due to weather changes. )

I also had to get caught up on some yard work, but it was a bit breezy today anyway. I got finished with yard work, and got some things ready to fly tomorrow, though! Test ran an engine/tank set up on a new-to-me airplane. Hope to get it wrung out some tomorrow, and get a few flights on Dusty also before hanging it up for the winter. Flew some dime store rubber powered models under the street light before closing up the garage, does that count?

Dan, any airplane counts.  I flew my Williamson Flying Flounder and it lived up to it's name. Brought it home and repaired it. Rain and snow the rest of the week for me now.

Well I'm glad at least Shug and Don got some flying done.

Thursday, Wayne and I went out to the Fort to mow and get it ready for Tomorrow's(Sunday) expedition. He and Bob Z. and I are planning to converge on the field in the morning and fly. The forecast is for very light, 5mph, winds and sunny 60s.

I had to ground my Oriental with a plumbing problem at the Criterium, and it still needed a shakedown flight after extensive repairs. I let Wayne test fly it on Thursday, since my shoulder is still healing after the Ukey self destructed at Huntersville, and tried to yank my arm off. I'm going to take something light to fly and test my limits tomorrow. I'll start with my Baby Streaks, and if it feels okay, I will step up to the Yak-9. I might take the old Shoestring too, she hasn't been out to play in a long time.

I'm looking forward to getting the handle back in my hand, I don't like being grounded by the flight surgeon, but she looks after me, I'm thankful for that. I'll file a flight report, maybe with some pictures and videos.

Well no flying for the DOC.  Grandson had a wrestling tournament.  He won one and lost one.  Third match opponent backed out.  Walkout of the school and almost got blown over.  Did get the clamps off the Vagabond fuse and an engine mount drilled and tapped for the Fox .25's.   They wouldn't fit the la 25 holes.  Sunday is anniversary Sunday at Church.  Ready for good food and fellowship.

Too much rain down here so just out in the shop putzing with three builds in various stages

Only reason for my note is Fridley MN.

In the late 60s I attended Spring Lake Park Junior High while my Dad commanded the Twin Cities Army Ammunition plant and we lived in Fridely.

I learned to ice skate in Madsen park behind our house. Every winter the Parks dept would flood an area and put out a hot house.

Living all over as an Army brat, Fridely MN is one of my fondest times: First fish caught a very big Walleye, first girl friend, first snowmobile driving, first mini bike riging (a friends bike), learned to play hockey, first major league base ball game watching the Twins beat the crap out of some team but all I remember is Harmon Killebrew 3rd Base was my favorite

Thanks Shug, your post put a smile on me for the rest of the day!

My 11 year old son and I wanted to go fly the 1/2a skyray but my wife had other plans for me. On the plus side I picked up some shelf paper at the home improvement store for masking a Sig 1/2a Deweybird while getting garden supplies. Today the weather is crummy so I should be free from garden duty but no flying.

We lost our field till the first of the year.  So not much flying. Got permission to do some  school yard flying.  We did about 8 flights before the wind came up, high in the 60s, lots of sun but wind made it cool.  I over corrected when I tried to remove a warp in the wing of one my new planes & only made the problem much worse in the opposite direction.  My flights were not much fun but got a better handle on prop size & RPM for 5.3-5.5  sec laps.

Finished the day down the road at the R/C field, giant War Bird Fly-in, WW1 or WW2.  Super scale Wildcat. P47, P-51 & Waco Bipe were impressive.  Impressed with the scale way these planes were flown by the pilots, radial engines helped.  The Wildcat had all the aluminum panels slightly different shade of aluminum for most & all the rivets, nicely weathered also.  It had that strange scale operating landing gear. There were other nicely done Mustangs, AT-6s, Taylorcraft observation planes, & a dozen of the WW1 Mono, Bi, or Triplanes.  I wonder if the lozenge pattern was hand done?  Couple of J-3s just for fun.  A good place to take the MRS. "See how much money I could be spending!"

By the time I got home the Club President had called & left word that I was the winner of the R/C kit raffle.

Suppose the day could have been better but not by much.  I did miss those 3 giant scale crashes the day before.

I'm still jacked from today's flying.
I'm back!
Flew the Oriental with no shoulder discomfort at all. It does pull harder after the repairs, but flies straight and true... better, I dare say. I did a decent pattern with it too. I wasn't sure if I was going to get that ambitious, but I'm glad I did. I flew five planes today, got videos of everybody. I'll post a report later. Got Bob Z. with his famous Stunt Rocket. Maybe I got one of those captures like the one everybody has seen from Capn' Blackhawk. It was a great day flying.

Chicago Circle Cutters got in some flights Sunday Morning with 5 pilots.  We had a real nice day here in Chicago, but looks like things are going to change soon.  Might be getting close to the beginning of building season.
