Title: Smoothie leadouts
Post by: Paul Allen on June 15, 2009, 07:07:09 PM
Guy's
Need some advice on the leadout position for the Brodak Smoothie kit.
Here in Australia for Classic Stunt, adjustable leadouts are not allowed, unless
the original model had them,so can someone who has the Brodak Smoothie flying
give me some idea of the fixed position, how close is the position marked on the plan?
Also how much tip weight as it has to be fixed as well,no weight box.
Thanks in advance

The plans should as close as you can get them.  Just remember they should(front leadout) in my opinion should be at or behind the CG.  Now for the experts.  DOC Holliday

G'day Paul

When I drew the plans for Brodak, I tried to put the CG, at the right place for the design. I used a spot determined by a percentage of the stab and elevators area, at the MAC.

The CG shown on the plans falls right at the rear of the spar.

I used a 3 degree sweep back for the line exit to locate the center of the exit position. The front leadout is slightly behind the CG, and the entire leadout position shoiuld be pretty good for the CG location shown.

I hope this helps you

Paul,
My Smoothie has an adjustable tip wt box and I measure the tip weight needed by holding the fully rigged plane by the nose (tip of spinner) and the tail (base of rudder) and letting the outboard wing tip rest on a scale. Measuring the weight this way, my plane flies well with the outboard wing weighing 1 1/2 oz. The Smoothie is a great flying plane. One of my favorites.
Does this help?
Jim
