Off Topic...Computer questions...<sigh>
« on: August 29, 2017, 06:53:45 PM »
So, I started using FireFox maybe 6-8 months ago. Occasionally, I get interrupted by somebody trying to get me to "update" (or corrupt?) Firefox. It seems to me that such a thing should come from a logical url, obviously tied to the folks that make Firefox, but no such luck. So far, I've rejected their kind offer, but I also have more trouble with Firefox locking up and shutting down than I ever did with IE, which Brett said was horrid. When I had to update from Win8 to Win10, I tried "Edge" and hated it, so went back to latest type of IE, and it wasn't too bad...at least, it wasn't a totally strange new browser. I don't understand why they can't fix a few glitches and let it be. Justifying their salaries is all I can come up with for an explanation.

Plus, just now I got a "Privacy Enhancement" offer from "DigitalPrivacyAlert.org". What they want to do sounds good...but Firefox doesn't seem to want me to download their wonderful offer. I haven't gotten to the point where they expect me to pay...maybe don't, IDK. Any guidance on these issues would be great!  H^^ Steve

"Privacy Enhancement" offer from "DigitalPrivacyAlert.org"

Malware (adware)!!  Do NOT open it.  Need to clean up your system to clear the "adware", likely caused from downloading some free software that contained some not so great "add-ons" that are causing this.

I used IE for years, and for no good reason tried Google Browser and got used to it
with XP, Vista, MS 7, I tried out Mozilla and Fire Fox and both punished me all the time with constant nags for add ons, updates, enhancements and such...many were adware or true malware and my suite of AV tools were always quarantining and bitching at me

When Bill in Redmond hosed me and self installed MS 10 on all 5 of my computers, I did revert back to MS 7 on a few but decided to try it out... still do not like the BS of the crap in the  Start menu but have learned to live with it
That brought me back to Google cuz I hated the Edge browser in MS 10

I personally do not like the Google business practices, but I have to admit the Google Browser is the most problem free I ever used since 1982 when I started seriously playing with home computers and software

It is perfectly normal for Firefox to update itself regularely.
The current version is: 55.0.3

I went to Chrome a long time ago. I currently use 3 protection programs. Windows defender, Kasperski antivirus, and spy hunter anti Malware. I run all 3 regularly.

Another vote for the Chrome, Steve.  It is less of a PITA than the others.  Now if I could just get Cortana to quit popping up uninvited.

I don't know. I'm not a Windoze user so I only know unix stuff. The unix version of Firefox seems to work fine with no issues.

Didn't figure out how to get Firefox updated, but did sign up on the Mozilla website for "Privacy Badger".  I've been running SuperAntiSpyware (free edition) and CCleaner in addition to the Panda AV. The Panda AV actually seems to work well. My son setup this computer (his old one with some updates). I'll see how things go now.

Thank youse for your responses...yep, even Randy.  ;) Steve

Chrome is a bit strange, but once you have it set up to the way you like it, it is just about bullet proof. (set it and forget it) Plus if you have a GMAIL account, then chrome makes access really easy. Anywho, I found chrome easier to deal with than firefox.

Yeah, I tried Chrome for awhile, but apparently never got it setup right, because it didn't make me want to keep using it. Still have it, I think.

Some of you guys like computers...I took Cobal (did I spell it right?) about 1970. They are useful, but full of frustrations for me. I've got other stuff I'd rather do than screw around trying to get a computer to work. The very worst part is the software people continually starting something new, instead of fine-tuning the product they already sold me to make it work right. That there really gets my blood boiling.  R%%%% Steve

Well, no, I won't. I won't be using any CAD program. I look at it as being yet another hobby. I haven't got time for more hobbies.

Right now, my hobbies are apparently ditch digging/roof water management systems, and cedar fence/gate building. Luckily, fishing buddy (Ernie Linn's kid, Ernie) has taken a trip to LV and So.Cal, so no playing with fish for another week or so.  :( Steve
