Title: Slice and Dice Tomorrow
Post by: KenP51 on April 15, 2014, 05:28:03 PM
omorrow (April 16) I go in to have C5, 6, and & fused in my neck. They will use as much of my bone matter as they can and the rest will be cadaver bone.
The hospital has a real good reputation well as the doctors and staff there. I have had severel friends here say it is more like a hotel stay vice your typical hospital stay.
I have a 7 am show time so they will start prep a little after that. I will be staying 1 night.

Sort of stops for a bit any plane building and longer to fly as I am not supposed to crank my head back beyond level.

Ken, it's got to be a little frightening to put yourself in someone's hands for such a serious matter. I hope you come back 100% because I want to come down and pit for you. I will be your safety engineer as well. I know how you and 10/22 get along.  ;D CLP** ;D. All the best for you and your family.WC

Hi Ken,
I am scheduled to have a very similar surgery on the 21st of this month. I had episodes of extreme pain plus numbness and weakness in arms & legs.  The episodes are getting more and more frequent and lasting for longer periods. I can and I have dealt with a lot of pain in my past, but I can't deal with the possibility of being incapacitated so I had no choice but surgery.
I went to a class for spinal surgery patients tonight and learned a lot. Us cervical patients actually have an easier time recovering than any surgery on any lower part of the spine, which is good news for us.

Ken, I wish you well and may God keep you and watch over you.

Well Ken you are probably under the knife now.   Hope the Doctors do a good job on you.   You probably won't see my response until they let you move.   Hope it is not like when they did a spinal on a room mate I had many years ago when they were working on my leg.   He was told to lay flat on his back and not move for at least 12 hours.   He didn't listen and there was morphine given him to settle him down again.  So I hope you followed the Doctors orders as well as the good looking nurses. H^^

Well I an Home from hospital.
Surgey went well
A bit hopped up on pain meds, but I dont feel but just a little bit of pain almost gone
Carpal tunnel right hand still hurts like heck  deal with that later
Arthritis in hands hips and knee is nasty They took me off my meds for that and can't start again for 2 months  Got to tell people I cant shake hands
Nerve pain in upper body dropped way down in few hours and now the fire in my legs has nearly
My laptop crashed the night before going in.
just got to call Dell and get it reloaded back to factory fresh  ROOTKIT Cant fix that wipe drive and restore to factory fresh the set up again
using Wifes

We have a RN here where we are staying so in good hands

I am in a hard neck brace for 2-3 months no anti inflamation meds for 2 months as they interfere with the bone grafts healing. They used as much as the could salvage from neck and the cadaver

And yes the surgeon said it is easier to fix cervical than lumbar. That will also be done later

Got to get my wife fixed up some now She is also a mess getting old is hard

GOD IS GOOD AND WISER THAN US. It was hard to accept all of this and loss of apartment. But he has us just where we need to be for now

This is not how I normaly post I watch spelling and punctuation as best I know how but that will be later

thanks all of you

Hi Ken,

Glad things are working out good for you!  I will continue to pray that your healing will be complete.

I don't have any discs in my neck anymore, they just atrophied away.  Been about 20 years in the situation.  Now the pain has almost gone except for some nerve infringement from time to time.  They just got pounded out over 15 years of football and hitting people with my head! LOL!!  Doc says heavy squats also contributed to it.  No talk of surgery yet, so I feel lucky!

Take care, follow directions and get back on the handle when you are ready.

But I am still a ways from being able to travel. But feeling good, Not using any pain meds now, and walking 5 blocks now. And then I go nap! I have not been able to walk that far in over a year now.
Swallowing still hurts a lot. Off of my athritis med and anti inflammatory meds for two months so my hands hurt like hell. Next sucker that wants to shake my hand might get Jack Slapped

I am using my CPAP machine For the first time in years (I admit I should always have used it). My upper chest is sore and the passages are still very angery at being pushed out of the way during surgery. So my breathing during sleep was extremely bad. I stopped breathing at least once a minute. Wife was exhausted with the noise I was making when I stopped. I used it the first time yesterday after I took my after walk nap. slept and hour and then said lets go dancing. I feel good, A little two step and a Rumba. Lets dance.

I had a great sleep with the CPAP last night. Time to dance all day and all night. But I think I will pass on doing the Twist though.

AN up date at almost 2 weeks out.

First follow up with the surgeon. I am healing nicely but a mixed bag of results. He now has more questions than answers as some of the pain is returning (nerve pain in legs). The lumbar are has the same issues as my cervical area did so may need to fuse some vertebrae there. I was aware of that before. More test more specialist.
Nerve pain in legs is returning so off to a neurologist, and he doubled my nerve pain meds with out me asking him to increase. I think he knows something I don't want to know. He then said it could be doubled again to 3600mg. That I already knew

But I can start SHORT drives again in 2 days.

Three months for the fusion in the neck to heal.

So 3 months no arthritis meds (interferes with healing of the bone graft) so a lot of arthritis pain and real bad in the hands. But I figured out this hand shaking stuff. Go ahead and start to take the other persons hand when they offer it. But then surprise them and take their wrist instead. They will be surprised a bit but take your wrist as well. And they can't hurt my hand. Did that to our pastor Sunday and the Dr today. It is fun to watch their face. I do explain why afterwards.

Yep we do Doc.
The scary thing is i think about theses things like they were an engineering aspect of a build. But it works out and that just might be why.
Got  a soft collar. More freedom, soon to drive YEEE HAAAAA
