Jetco Shark 15 Kit (Updated)
« on: December 13, 2016, 01:47:19 PM »
I was thinking about maybe having Eric Rule at RSM do a CAD drawing on the old Jetco Shark 15 design and cutting a kit for me and then adding it to my kit line for sale to anyone else who might want to buy one.  Is anyone interested in owning one?  I will also check and make sure no one else is kitting it before I produce one.

Thank you
Mike

I'll take one. Here's pics of mine built from the jetco kit. The wood was horrible, die cutting sucked and it was way overbuilt. Plane flies beautifully though. Please include adjustable leadouts ( the little brodak style nylon piece works so nice ) and nice long motor mounts.

I am. My flying buddy Charlie has an old original Jetco that's been crashed and rebuilt many times and still flys well?

There is a long way to go before we can start talking about pricing.  I need to check and make sure no one else is kitting this or owns the rights to the model.  I have been down this road before and am going to check everything out before I come out with a kit.  I am just seeing how much interest there might be in the design.  Brodak puts out a Shark 402 which looks a little similar to the SHark 15 but is not the same model..  I will keep you informed as time goes by.

The Brodak Shark 402 is a fine kit, but looks nothing like the original Shark 15. Here's my 402-

I learned the pattern on the Shark 15 and then built another one. Both flew great. I might like one if I ever catch up.....  HB~>

Mike you may not want to do this one because I was given permissions to do the Shark 15 from Lou several years ago.
Not only that I still make them when they are ordered.

Thank you and God Bless

Too bad.  I was going to volunteer to do the plans.  Just to throw it out there, when there is a plane which has been out of production for so many years, and someone simply redraws it for others to use, is there anything about that which is un-kosher?  Back about 15 years ago, I drew plans for the Ringmaster S-1.  Since then both Brodak and RSM have been using my plans along with myself in making up the RM Gold kits.  I'm sure that there was a copyright on the originals, but since the companys kitting these kits are out of business (Sterling, Jetco, Dumas, etc), does it matter?  In otherwords, is this a case of "let a thousand flowers bloom"?
That said, I just finished building a Shark 202 (for electric) and started on designing a Shark 302.  All based on my Brodak Shark 402 design.  In fact, I just sent out a full bodied version (Shark 560) which looks really good.  For those interested in any of the variant Shark designs, just holler.

Thank you Pat and I could not agree with you more but this is what I get into every time I try to fulfill a need for the hobby.  In light of Walter's post I would suggest anyone who wants a kit of the Shark 15 to contact Walter.   I will scratch build one for myself.  Thank you all for the responses.

Here is a shot of the little Shark 202.  It can be built with either IC or electric power.  The ribs and half ribs counter slot into the sheer web and also into notches in the T/E.  This helps make the alignment of the ribs very easy.  The bellcrank, control horn and leadouts are all made from 1/16" plywood.  I think that the effort to install bushings on all the little parts took longer to do than to frame up the main airframe.  All up weight in E-power, should be 8-9 ounces.  For a 202 inch plane the wing loading will be terrific, not to mention the performance.  The Airfoil is my "+P" design which is off the charts in performance.
The electric package is a Turnigy2730-1500(kv), 3S-800mah battery, 10A ESC and 6-4 APC prop.  Good basic stunt setup for a 1/2A sized stunter.

Guys, I don't know what is going on but I had emailed John Brodak to see if he had the rights to kit the Shark15 and it took him a couple of days to get back to me and here is his reply to me plus three pictures he sent of the kit.  Walter says he is kitting it also so I guess all of you who want a kit have two places to get the kit now.

Hi Mike,

Attached are 3 pictures of the Shark 15. I would have kitted this a year ago but I have been fighting cancer for 2 years. I already have the plans and the laser cut parts done sorry.

I built one many years ago from the Jetco kit for a friend.  Maybe put an Enya 19 on it (I don't recall.)  But  anyway, it was a great little ship - nice and stable in the air and stunted great!  Whoever you buy the kit from, I'm sure you'll like it!

I have located a pristine original Shark 15  Jetco Kit and it is on the way to me.  I will trace the parts and build the model and save the kit. Then I will make templates of the parts in case anything ever happens to the kit.  Larry Richards showed me how to make very accurate templates and over the years I have cut hundreds of templates.  I hope to start building mine after Christmas.

  Hey Mike!
Making templates like Larry showed you would make a neat thread. Wouldn't take too many photos and I'm always interested in learning new tricks!

Myself if I have a kit that I think I would build another, I use the kit to make myself one and save the kit.

My brother Bob used to trace and list every part in what ever kit he would build.  Don't know what happened to his tracings.
