Just remember one thing----some of the most deadly critters on planet Earth are in Australia.  Snakes, spiders, you name it.  And not all are land based.  If you go in the water, what are your chances of encountering sharks, blue-ringed octopus, etc?

Nevertheless, I would like to visit that place sometime, maybe also a side trip to New Zealand.

Most of the dangerous critters are fairly timid — unless you step on them or they are cornered.

However, as Dave said, the drop bears are a real danger.

A least a couple times a season I find black widows in my car or at home.  These crawl onto my flying kit at the field and I carry them unknowingly away.   That bothers me enough.  I'd hate to have the same happen with one of these critters.

Despite spending a full month in Australia (1983 World FF Champs), other than in a couple of sanctuaries, I saw zero killer critters. From Melbourne to some distance North of Brisbane, and West to Goulburn. I did not go tramping through the tall grass or swim with the sharks. I did walk all around the TSR "stock route"...a trail for cattle drives to the rail yard.
I rode the commuter train from Cabulture into Brisbane, which was interesting and different!

I rented a car and drove the 600 miles from Brisbane to Sydney on the "wrong" side of the road...and survived...it's tricky around town, but easy on the highway. Roundabouts were interesting, but now that we have some around here, they're getting easier. Finding a restaurant open for breakfast was nearly impossible. Food was different. Be careful when buying a burger, lest it come with pineapple and slices of beets...OMG!  Steve
