2019 KOI Scoring

A fellow modeler was reading the Flying Rules in our literature and called AMA today to point out we are going to be deviating from the AMA Rulebook for our events. Tony Stillman called Wayne today to speak to him about it.

We are going to allow each contestant three (3) attempts to make two (2) official flights with BOTH flight scores to be averaged to determine the winner of each particular event.

I was told the caller stated this was a deviation from the AMA Control Line Precision Aerobatic rules. Darned if I could find it in the rules. If any of you know what section this is in, please let me know (I am just curious).

These are the only two pertinent sections I could find:

Part of Section 7.0 "Contestants shall be allowed three (3) attempts to make two (2) official flights."

Section 9.3. The score sheet at the conclusion of this section is recommended by the CL Aerobatics Contest Board, but any other system with which the judges are familiar may be used, provided it is at least as comprehensive as the one recommended. (As scoring is very important for this event, the CB is constantly looking for improvements. Suggested CLA-4 improvements should be sent to AMA Headquarters for forwarding to the CB Chairman.

While I could not find where our scoring procedures deviate from the rule book, it is always important contestants know exactly what rules they will be flying under at any particular event. Our 2019 KOI Contest literature clearly spells out these scoring procedures. I can only assume the caller wanted to make sure these scoring procedures are also listed in the AMA Events section of Model Aviation.

Wayne had already submitted the copy to be used in the Model Aviation event listings (not yet published), so we have revised them to the following to insure our scoring procedures are very clear to any potential entrant:

Event name: King Orange International
Approved dates: 9/13/2019 - 9/15/2019
Location: KOI Site
Category: Control Line Precision Aerobatics

Event description:
9/13-Practice; Sat 9/14 Warbird, Old Time, Nostalgia, Profile; No BOM; Concours Starts @ 5pm; Sun 9/15 Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert; No BOM;  Events Scoring Deviation - Pilots have (3) attempts to make two official flights. Official Flight scores are averaged to determine the winner. Mufflers req.; Pre-registration by 9/3/19 Full Info-email: stuntflyn@gmail.com or 813-230-1287 Trophies/Cash Awards

Contest Director:
Mr WAYNE N SMITH
Phone: (813)464-9965
Email: kamwns@VERIZON.NET

We do thank the caller for bringing this to our attention so we can be sure any future advertising, also insures scoring procedures are clear to everyone. In our opinion, averaging both flight scores provides a more level playing field and also insures if a set of judges just happen to be the lower scoring set (one set is always higher on average and the other set is always lower on average) that the lower set of judges scores aren't almost always the scores thrown out. If you have ever been to the U.S. Nationals and flown in Open Stunt, you know flight scores are based on averages.

I found the rule - I didn't have the 2019 - 2020 AMA C/L Precision Aerobatic Rules. It is located in Section 9.1:

9.1.
Scoring shall be based on the appearance of the model and the degree of perfection with which maneuvers are performed. The contestant’s flight point score for competition purposes shall be the average of the scores given by no less than two (2) judges. Flight points used shall be those accumulated during the better of the two (2) official flights permitted
.

At the 2019 King Orange International, we will have two deviations from the rule: No Builder of the Model Rule; Flight points used shall be those accumulated during BOTH of the two (2) official flights permitted.
