Size of the flaps on a SIG Akrobat?
« on: July 08, 2012, 02:21:32 PM »
Someone gave me a SIG Akrobat and the flaps seem real small.
1.5 inches at the root going down to .75 inch at the tip.
Anyone know if that is correct or should they be wider?

Paul,
The plans show straight flaps, 1 1/2 in. at the root and 1 1/2 at the tip

Thanks Steve.

That seems a little small for the size of plane.

Is anyone flying one of these planes with this size flap?

Thanks Steve.

Is anyone flying one of these planes with this size flap?

The flaps on my Twister are 2-1/4 at the root and 3/4 (or maybe 5/8) at the tip.  A straight 1-1/2 flap is the same area.

I suspect that when the original builder made it he tapered the flaps to look good, without considering the aerodynamic consequences.

Is the plane flyable?  Why not give it a whirl and see how it goes?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Hi Paul,

I just had time to dig out my Akrobat kit and have a look. The plans show straight 1.5" wide flaps like Steve said, but the flaps supplied in the kit are actually 2" wide root to tip.

I suppose the constant-chord flaps were designed to look 'scale' as the real Zlin 526 has a straight trailing edge.

Hope thats of some use!

Mike
