Title: Silkspan - Shelf Life?
Post by: Larry Fruits on July 14, 2012, 01:14:55 PM
 I have some K & S (GM) and SIG (OO) silkspan left over from the 70's, and I am wondering if it would good to use. It has been rolled in the original boxes and is a slight tan color. I don't remember if it was that color originally, or if it was white. Pretty sure the K & S was not white. Newer silkspan I have from SIG is white. I am sure it would be OK over wood surfaces, but would it be OK to use on open bay areas?
 Thanks;

Hi Larry,

You are rolling the dice as to whether or not it will work on open bays.  You are correct that it will probably be fine over solid surfaces.  I would definitely be wary of the "tan" silkspan being of use on open bays.  The stuff can lose its effectiveness over the years.

Try taring it, is should be fairly tough, silk span rots over time, but kept in the box it still may be good. If is tares like toilet paper, can it!

Thanks for the replies. You have confirmed my thoughts about "not" using it on open bays.
 Thanks again;
