SIG Twister Prototype
« on: February 26, 2016, 06:26:44 AM »
I got this lovely picture from Todd Lee awhile back of the late, great Mike Gretz and the Prototype Twister, taken circa 2000 at the Polk City Contest.  Two questions:

1) Does anyone know the model's whereabouts?

2) Does anyone know the color scheme?  The sunburst stripes, I have always thought, were black.  In the photo they look a bit purple, although black paint, ink, ect tend to have a purple hue when faded.

Thanks a bunch!

I can't say for sure, but my best guess would be that the model is hanging somewhere at the Sig plant.  Bob Nelson would know.  Bob had another of Mike's models at our last club meeting (a small electric Ringmaster that he was developing quite some time ago) that we intend to finish off and get flying, hopefully in time to let people fly it at our June contest as a tribute to Mike.

The colors were 'orange and black', no doubt Sig dope so I don't know what shade(s) of orange (or black) if there are more than one of each.

It looks like an honest to gosh paper photograph, in which case the black is almost certainly faded.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have 2 unopened Twisters in stock.  The picture on the box shows a human  hand holding the plane by the inboard wing tip. the colors are orange and BLACK on the boxes.

I think it's a takeoff of Dean Englehardt's Stephens Acro. A theme of SIG kits, semi scale stunters  like the Acromaster from Pappy Spinks (ARCO has nothing to do with it), and of course the Chipmunk.
Orange, black, white and you've got it, Sean.

Here is a photo of the 16"x20" acrylic-on-canvas that I painted several years ago.  It was presented to Mike Gretz at one of the last Sig CL contests.  He seemed to like it.

   Hi again Chris!
Didn't Mike have a web page dedicated to the stories behind the designs? When Mike passed away, I found the one on the Chipmunk, but couldn't turn up the one the other SIG C/L designs.

There are different shades of orange. I guess I could check some old SIG catalogs and see what orange dope colors they had back then.
   Type at you later,
